Abstract

A surgical stapler is provided that includes a spring loaded lift that automatically adjusts a staple cartridge and/or staple formation between a range of sizes. The lift is automatically released as the staple firing mechanism begins its forward translation of the firing sequence. The automatic one-way adjustment also adjusts the staple cartridge while maintaining the cartridge parallel to the anvil to provide consistent staple formations.

Claims (17)

1 . A surgical stapler comprising:

a first jaw including an anvil;

a second jaw including a cartridge including a plurality of staples, the first jaw movable towards and away from the second jaw;

a cartridge lift comprising:

a first cartridge lift extending along a first side of the cartridge between the cartridge and the second jaw; and

a second cartridge lift extending along a second side of the cartridge between the cartridge and the second jaw;

wherein each of the first cartridge lift and the second cartridge lift comprises a plurality of slots formed therein, wherein the second jaw comprises a plurality of protrusions extending into engagement with the plurality of slots to move the cartridge vertically within the second jaw towards the anvil upon longitudinal movement of the first and second cartridge lifts.

2 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cartridge lifts are biased in a proximal direction to move the cartridge vertically towards the anvil.

3 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the first cartridge lift and the second cartridge lift are connected to form a single monolithic structure.

4 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of protrusions extend from the cartridge.

5 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the second jaw further comprises a cartridge retainer.

6 . The surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of protrusions extend from the cartridge retainer.

7 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw is pivotably coupled to the second jaw.

8 . The surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw comprises jaw springs biasing the first jaw into a spaced configuration relative to the second jaw.

The surgical stapler of claim 1 , further comprising an actuation beam longitudinally slidable distally a first predetermined distance from a proximal position in which the first jaw is positioned away from the second jaw to a closed position in which the first jaw is moved towards the second jaw.

10 . The surgical stapler of claim 9 , wherein upon further longitudinally distal advancement of the actuation beam beyond the first predetermined distance, the actuation beam activates the cartridge lift.

11 . The surgical stapler of claim 10 , wherein further longitudinally distal advancement of the actuation beam beyond the first predetermined distance, the staples are ejected from the cartridge.
