Abstract

Land vehicles and methods of operating land vehicles are disclosed. A land vehicle includes a frame structure, a plurality of wheels, and a plurality of electric motors. The frame structure includes a front cage that at least partially defines an operator cabin and a rear compartment positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction. The plurality of wheels are supported by the frame structure. The plurality of wheels includes a pair of front wheels and a pair of rear wheels positioned rearward of the pair of front wheels in the longitudinal direction.

Claims (31)

1 . An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame structure including a front cage that at least partially defines an operator cabin and a rear compartment positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction;

a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure;

a plurality of wheel hub motors each integrated directly into a corresponding one of the plurality of wheels; and

a brake system at least partially integrated into each one of the plurality of wheels opposite the corresponding wheel hub motor.

2 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of wheel hub motors is arranged adjacent an exterior side of the corresponding wheel.

3 . The electric vehicle of claim 2 , wherein each brake system is arranged adjacent an interior side of the corresponding wheel opposite the exterior side.

4 . The electric vehicle of claim 3 , wherein a disc including a plurality of teeth defines the interior side of each of the plurality of wheels.

5 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric vehicle has a gross vehicular weight rating (GVWR) of between 10,001 pounds and 14,000 pounds.

6 . The electric vehicle of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of wheel hub motors is configured to generate about 100 horsepower (hp).

7 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , comprising at least one power cell assembly to supply electrical power to the plurality of wheel hub motors that is supported by the frame structure,

wherein the at least one power cell assembly comprises a plurality of power cells arranged to define at least three rows in a lateral direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction.

8 . The electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the at least one power cell assembly comprises a plurality of cooling plates to dissipate heat generated by the plurality of power cells in use thereof.

9 . The electric vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of power cells are stacked on top of the plurality of cooling plates in a vertical direction.

10 . The electric vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the at least one power cell assembly comprises an intermediate tray interposed between the plurality of power cells and the plurality of cooling plates in the vertical direction.

11 . An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame structure including a front cage that at least partially defines an operator cabin and a rear compartment positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction;

a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure;

a plurality of wheel hub motors each integrated directly into a corresponding one of the plurality of wheels; and

at least one power cell assembly to supply electrical power to the plurality of wheel hub motors that is supported by the frame structure, the at least power cell assembly including a plurality of power cells arranged to define at least three rows in a lateral direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction.

12 . The electric vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the at least one power cell assembly comprises a plurality of cooling plates to dissipate heat generated by the plurality of power cells in use thereof.

13 . The electric vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the at least one power cell assembly includes a bottom tray and a casing supported by the bottom tray that houses the plurality of cooling plates.

14 . The electric vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of power cells are stacked on top of the plurality of cooling plates in a vertical direction.

15 . The electric vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the casing and the bottom tray are stacked upon one another in the vertical direction.

16 . The electric vehicle of claim 15 , wherein the at least one power cell assembly comprises an intermediate tray interposed between the plurality of power cells and the plurality of cooling plates in the vertical direction.

17 . The electric vehicle of claim 11 , comprising a second power cell assembly to supply electrical power to the plurality of wheel hub motors that is supported by the frame structure and spaced from the first power cell assembly in the longitudinal direction.

18 . A method of operating an electric vehicle including a frame structure, a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure, and a plurality of wheel hub motors each integrated directly into a corresponding one of the plurality of wheels, the method comprising:

operating the plurality of wheel hub motors independently of one another to drive rotation of the plurality of wheels, and

steering the plurality of wheels to adjust an orientation of the electric vehicle, wherein steering the plurality of wheels to adjust the orientation of the electric vehicle comprises turning the electric vehicle 360 degrees in a circular path.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein turning the electric vehicle 360 degrees in the circular path comprises turning the electric vehicle 360 degrees in the circular path without shifting the electric vehicle to a reverse operating range.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein operating the plurality of wheel hub motors independently of one another comprises selectively transitioning between a two-wheel drive mode and a four-wheel drive mode of the electric vehicle.
