Abstract

Certain substances (e.g., large molecules) that ordinarily cannot traverse the cell membrane of cells can be introduced into cells by applying an alternating electric field to the cell for a period of time, wherein the frequency of the alternating electric field is selected so that application of the alternating electric field increases permeability of the cell membrane. Once the permeability of the cell membrane has been increased, the substance is able to cross the cell membrane. This approach is particularly useful in the context of cancer cells (e.g., glioblastoma).

Claims (8)

1 . A method for enhancing drug uptake in bacteria cells in a subject that has a bacterial infection, the method comprising:

applying an alternating electric field to a target region of a subject's body for a period of time, wherein application of the alternating electric field increases permeability of the bacteria cell membranes; and

administering an antibiotic to the subject.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the period of time is at least 24 hours.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the alternating electric field is applied to the target region prior to and during the administering of the antibiotic.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of administering the antibiotic begins at a given time, and wherein the step of applying the alternating electric field ends at least 12 hours after the given time.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the step of applying the alternating electric field begins at least one hour before the given time.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bacteria cells are drug resistant or multidrug-resistant, and wherein applying the alternating electric field increases the permeability of the bacteria cell membranes to a point where the drug resistance can be overcome.
