Abstract

An unmanned aerial vehicle with deployable components (UAVDC) is disclosed. The system may include a sweeping gearbox designed to deploy at least one wing from a compact to a deployed arrangement. A controller may be configured to detect launch conditions, monitor for conditions, and trigger the gearbox upon condition fulfillment. Activation of the sweeping gearbox may result in wing deployment, adapted to the detected conditions. The method may involve deploying wings using the sweeping gearbox, launching detection, monitoring for conditions, and activating the gearbox for wing deployment upon condition detection.

Claims (47)

1 . An aerial vehicle comprising:

at least one propeller; and

a controller configured to:

detect a launch;

monitor for at least one condition;

detect satisfaction of the at least one condition; and

delay deployment of the at least one propeller until after detecting the satisfaction of the at least one condition.

2 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to deploy the at least one propeller in response to the satisfaction of the at least one condition.

3 . The aerial vehicle of claim 2 , wherein deployment of the at least one propeller comprises turning on a motor to cause centripetal forces to deploy the at least one propeller.

4 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition comprises a time since the launch.

5 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition comprises detection of a tube launch.

6 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one of: dropped from an aerial vehicle, velocity, acceleration, leveling, deployment of one or more deployable components, or a distance after the detection of the launch by the controller.

7 . The aerial vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the one or more deployable components comprise at least one wing configured to be deployed from a compact arrangement to a deployed arrangement, wherein the at least one propeller is deployed after the at least one wing is deployed.

8 . The aerial vehicle of claim 7 , further comprising an outer section of the at least one wing that extends outward in response to the deployment of the at least one wing, wherein the outer section further comprises a control surface.

9 . The aerial vehicle of claim 7 , further comprising a wing deployment mechanism, wherein:

the controller is further configured to activate the wing deployment mechanism in response to satisfaction of the at least one condition; and

an activation of the wing deployment mechanism is configured to cause a deployment of the at least one wing.

10 . The aerial vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the wing deployment mechanism further comprises at least one of:

a first configuration corresponding to a first launch condition, wherein the first launch condition corresponds to an aerial launch; and

a second configuration corresponding to a second launch condition, wherein the second launch condition corresponds to a ground launch.

11 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to operate the aerial vehicle to perform a mission after the deployment of the at least one propeller.

12 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one propeller is configured to deploy, at least in part, due to air pressure against the at least one propeller or centrifugal force from rotation of the at least one propeller.

13 . The aerial vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the launch is from a tube-integrated system.

14 . An unmanned aerial vehicle comprising:

at least one propeller; and

a controller configured to:

detect a launch;

monitor for at least one condition;

determine that the at least one condition is satisfied; and

cause deployment of the at least one propeller in response to determining the at least one condition is satisfied.

15 . The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 14 , wherein causing deployment the at least one propeller comprises turning on a motor to cause centrifugal forces to cause the at least one propeller to transition from a stowed state to a deployed state.

16 . The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 15 , wherein:

in the stowed state, one or more blades of the at least one propeller are oriented along a thrust axis of the unmanned aerial vehicle; and

in the deployed state, the one or more blades the at least one propeller extend from the unmanned aerial vehicle perpendicular to the thrust axis.

17 . The unmanned aerial vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the transition of the at least one propeller from the stowed state to the deployed state is further caused by air pressure against the at least one propeller.

18 . A method for deploying at least one propeller of an unmanned aerial vehicle, the method comprising:

detecting a launch of an unmanned aerial vehicle;

monitoring for at least one condition;

determining that the at least one condition is satisfied; and

causing deployment of at least one propeller of the unmanned aerial vehicle in response to determining the at least one condition is satisfied.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein causing deployment of the at least one propeller comprises turning on a motor to cause centrifugal forces to cause the at least one propeller to transition from a stowed state to a deployed state.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein:

in the stowed state, one or more blades of the at least one propeller are oriented along a thrust axis of the unmanned aerial vehicle; and

in the deployed state, the one or more blades the at least one propeller extend from the unmanned aerial vehicle perpendicular to the thrust axis.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the transition of the at least one propeller from the stowed state to the deployed state is further caused by air pressure against the one or more blades of the at least one propeller.

22 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the at least one condition comprises a time since the launch.

23 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the at least one condition comprises detection of a tube launch.
