EXCLUSION DEVICE SPRINGS AND RELATED METHODS
Exclusion devices for anatomical structures, and related instruments and related methods, are disclosed. An exclusion device for an anatomical structure may include a first beam, a second beam, and a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam, where the first spring is configured to maintain the first beam and the second beam along a common plane, and where the first spring is configured to be exclusively repositionable along the common plane.
1 . An exclusion device for an anatomical structure, the exclusion device comprising:
a first beam;
a second beam; and
a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam;
wherein the first spring is configured to maintain the first beam and the second beam along a common plane; and
wherein the first spring is configured to be exclusively repositionable along the common plane.
2 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring comprises a first reverse bend portion and a second reverse bend portion.
3 . The exclusion device of claim 2 , wherein the first spring is configured so that the closing force is provided, at least in part, by the first reverse bend portion and the second reverse bend portion.
4 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein:
the first beam includes a first longitudinal cavity along a dominant longitudinal dimension of the exclusion device, the first longitudinal cavity including a first longitudinal opening configured to receive a first portion of the first spring;
the second beam includes a second longitudinal cavity along the dominant longitudinal dimension of the exclusion device, the second longitudinal cavity including a second longitudinal opening configured to receive a second portion of the first spring;
the first longitudinal cavity is delineated by a first rounded spring contact surface; and
the second longitudinal cavity is delineated by a second rounded spring contact surface.
5 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is substantially coplanar.
6 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring has a rectangular longitudinal cross-section.
7 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein opposing ends of the first spring are accessible via respective openings formed into the first beam and the second beam that extend transverse to a dominant longitudinal axis of the exclusion device.
8 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a second spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert an additional closing force on the first beam and the second beam;
wherein the second spring is configured to maintain the first beam and the second beam along the common plane;
wherein the second spring is configured to be exclusively repositionable along the common plane; and
wherein the second spring cooperates with the first spring, the first beam, and the second beam to delineate an enclosed opening extending through the common plane.
9 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is rigidly coupled to at least one of the first beam and the second beam.
10 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is configured to exert the closing force by exerting both a bending force and a torsional force.
11 . An exclusion device for an anatomical structure, the exclusion device comprising:
a first beam;
a second beam;
a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam; and
a second spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam;
wherein the first spring and the second spring cooperate to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam to bias the exclusion device closed;
wherein the first beam includes a first longitudinal cavity along a dominant longitudinal dimension of the exclusion device, the first longitudinal cavity including a first longitudinal opening configured to receive a first portion of the first spring;
wherein the second beam includes a second longitudinal cavity along the dominant longitudinal dimension, the second longitudinal cavity including a second longitudinal opening configured to receive a second portion of the first spring;
wherein the first portion of the first spring include a first projection extending transverse to the dominant longitudinal dimension that is received within a first recess, of the first beam, extending transverse to the dominant longitudinal dimension; and
wherein the second portion of the first spring include a second projection extending transverse to the dominant longitudinal dimension that is received within a second recess, of the second beam, extending transverse to the dominant longitudinal dimension.
12 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first spring and the second spring comprises a first reverse bend portion and a second reverse bend portion.
13 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein the first beam, the second beam, the first spring, and the second spring lie along a common plane.
14 . The exclusion device of claim 11 ,
wherein the first longitudinal cavity is delineated by a first rounded spring contact surface of the first beam; and
wherein the second longitudinal cavity is delineated by a second rounded spring contact surface of the second beam.
15 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first beam and the second beam includes a plurality of through openings extending transverse to a dominant longitudinal axis of the exclusion device.
16 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first spring and the second spring has a rectangular longitudinal cross-section.
17 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein opposing ends of at least one of the first spring and the second spring are accessible via respective openings formed into the first beam and the second beam that extend transverse to a dominant longitudinal axis of the exclusion device.
18 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein:
the first beam includes opposing forked ends that delineate a first pair of slots within which the first spring and the second spring are longitudinally and vertically repositioned, where a vertical direction is normal to a longitudinal direction; and
the second beam includes opposing forked ends that delineate a second pair of slots within which the first spring and the second spring are longitudinally and vertically repositioned.
19 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein:
the first spring is rigidly coupled to at least one of the first beam and the second beam; and
the second spring is rigidly coupled to at least one of the first beam and the second beam.
20 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first spring and the second spring is configured to exert the closing force by exerting both a bending force and a torsional force.
21 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first beam, the second beam, and the first spring are covered by a biocompatible fabric.
22 . The exclusion device of claim 11 , wherein the first beam, the second beam, the first spring, and the second spring are covered by a biocompatible fabric.
