Abstract

A transcutaneous stimulation system can be used to stimulate one or more nerves or proprioceptors to reduce essential tremor, Parkinson tremor, and other forms of tremor. Vibrotactile stimulation of proprioceptors is provided in certain aspects.

Claims (44)

1 . A system configured to calibrate transcutaneous stimulation to one or more tremor characteristics of a user, the system comprising:

one or more sensors configured to obtain data indicative of one or more tremor characteristics of the user, the one or more tremor characteristics comprises at least a tremor frequency of the user;

one or more mechanical effectors that are configured to apply the transcutaneous stimulation at one or more locations on a wrist of the user to stimulate one or more nerves or proprioceptors of the user,

wherein the one or more mechanical effectors are positioned on a wearable device,

wherein the wearable device comprises a band,

wherein the band is configured to wrap partially or completely around the wrist of the user, and

wherein the transcutaneous stimulation comprises vibrotactile stimulation; and

one or more processors configured to receive the data from the one or more sensors and to set one or more stimulation parameters of the transcutaneous stimulation based on processing of the data so as to calibrate the transcutaneous stimulation based, at least in part, on the tremor frequency of the user.

2 . The system of claim 1 ,

wherein the one or more processors are configured to filter the data to remove motions that are not attributable to the tremor,

wherein the one or more processors are configured to adjust the one or more stimulation parameters in a closed-loop control manner,

wherein the one or more sensors comprise one or more motion sensors,

wherein the wearable device comprises the one or more motion sensors, and

wherein the one or more stimulation parameters comprise frequency of the vibrotactile stimulation.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise motion sensors configured to measure motion of the wrist of the user.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the wearable device comprises the one or more motion sensors.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more stimulation parameters comprise one or more of frequency, phase or amplitude of the vibrotactile stimulation.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute one or more algorithms stored in memory of the wearable device.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mechanical effectors are configured to apply the transcutaneous stimulation at one or more locations on the wrist of the user to stimulate one or more proprioceptors of the user, and wherein the one or more proprioceptors comprise pressure receptors.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mechanical effectors comprise one or more vibrotactile units, motors, or piezoelectrics.

9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a rechargeable battery.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the vibrotactile stimulation comprises vibration applied to at least the one or more proprioceptors.

11 . A system configured to calibrate transcutaneous stimulation to one or more tremor characteristics of a user, the system comprising:

one or more sensors configured to obtain data indicative of one or more tremor characteristics of the user;

one or more mechanical effectors that are configured to apply the transcutaneous stimulation at one or more locations on a wrist of the user to stimulate one or more nerves or proprioceptors,

wherein the one or more mechanical effectors are positioned on a wearable device,

wherein the wearable device comprises a band,

wherein the band is configured to wrap partially or completely around the wrist of the user, and

wherein the transcutaneous stimulation comprises vibrotactile stimulation; and

one or more processors configured to receive the data from the one or more sensors and to set one or more stimulation parameters of the transcutaneous stimulation based on processing of the data so as to calibrate the transcutaneous stimulation based on the one or more tremor characteristics of the user.

12 . The system of claim 11 ,

wherein the one or more processors are configured to filter the data to remove motions that are not attributable to the tremor,

wherein the one or more processors are configured to adjust the one or more stimulation parameters in a closed-loop control manner,

wherein the one or more sensors comprise one or more motion sensors,

wherein the wearable device comprises the one or more motion sensors, and

wherein the one or more stimulation parameters comprise frequency of the vibrotactile stimulation.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise motion sensors configured to measure motion of the wrist of the user.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the wearable device comprises the one or more motion sensors.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more stimulation parameters comprise one or more of frequency, phase or amplitude of the vibrotactile stimulation.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to execute one or more algorithms stored in memory of the wearable device.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more mechanical effectors comprise one or more vibrotactile units, motors, or piezoelectrics.

18 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising a rechargeable battery.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the vibrotactile stimulation comprises vibration applied to at least the one or more proprioceptors.

20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more mechanical effectors are configured to apply the transcutaneous stimulation at one or more locations on the wrist of the user to stimulate one or more proprioceptors, and wherein the one or more proprioceptors comprise pressure receptors.
