Abstract

Dynamic scaling of a virtual storage system, including: detecting, within one or more virtual components of the virtual storage system, a change in performance; determining, in response to the detected change in performance, a scaling response based on the virtual storage system meeting one or more target performance metrics; and scaling, based on one or more available virtual components of the virtual storage system, up or down such that performance of the virtual storage system is in accordance within the one or more target performance metrics.

Claims (40)

1 . A method comprising:

detecting a change in performance of a virtual storage system; and

in response to detecting the change in performance of the virtual storage system, moving a quantity of virtual storage devices from a first set of virtual storage device servers to a second set of virtual storage device servers of the virtual storage system to satisfy one or more performance metrics.

2 . The method of claim 1 , detecting the change in performance further comprises:

detecting a change in an application demand for an application utilizing the virtual storage system.

3 . The method of claim 1 , detecting the change in performance further comprises:

collecting performance metrics or storage utilization metrics of the virtual storage system.

4 . The method of claim 1 , scaling further comprising:

modifying a quantity of virtual controllers of the virtual storage system.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

modifying a quantity of virtual drive servers of the virtual storage system.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to detecting the change in performance, rebalancing data stored in the first set of virtual storage device servers and the second set of virtual storage device servers.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein staging memory of the virtual storage system comprises a plurality of virtual storage device servers.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of virtual storage device servers comprise corresponding local storage.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of virtual storage device servers provide block-level data storage.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein at least a portion of data stored within the staging memory is deduplicated, encrypted, or compressed prior to migration from the staging memory to a durable data storage of the virtual storage system.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the staging memory of the virtual storage system has a lower read latency than the durable data storage.

12 . A storage system comprising:

a memory; and

a processing device, operatively coupled to the memory, configured to:

detect a change in performance of a virtual storage system; and

in response to detecting the change in performance of the virtual storage system, move a quantity of virtual storage devices from a first set of virtual storage device servers to a second set of virtual storage device servers of the virtual storage system to satisfy one or more performance metrics.

13 . The storage system of claim 12 , wherein to detect the change in performance, the processing device is further configured to:

detect a change in an application demand for an application utilizing the virtual storage system.

14 . The storage system of claim 12 , wherein to detect the change in performance, the processing device is further configured to:

collect performance metrics or storage utilization metrics of the virtual storage system.

15 . The storage system of claim 12 , wherein, to scale, the processing device is further configured to:

modify a quantity of virtual controllers of the virtual storage system.

16 . The storage system of claim 12 , wherein, to scale, the processing device is further configured to:

modify a quantity of virtual drive servers of the virtual storage system.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a processing device to:

detect a change in performance of a virtual storage system; and

in response to detecting the change in performance of the virtual storage system, move a quantity of virtual storage devices from a first set of virtual storage device servers to a second set of virtual storage device servers of the virtual storage system to satisfy one or more performance metrics.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

detect a change in an application demand for an application utilizing the virtual storage system.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

collect performance metrics or storage utilization metrics of the virtual storage system.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein the processing device is further configured to:

modify a quantity of virtual controllers of the virtual storage system.
