GOLF CLUB HEAD INCLUDING AN INSERT
A golf club head including a slot is disclosed herein. In accordance with the presently disclosed technology, the golf club head may include a striking face, a crown, a sole, and a slot. The striking face may include a lower striking face portion including a sole return, which includes a slot adjacent the leading edge. The sole may include a rear sole portion extending to the sole return.
1 . A golf club head comprising:
a striking face located at a frontal portion of the golf club head comprising a lower striking face portion comprising a sole return extending a return distance backward from a leading edge, wherein the sole return comprises a slot adjacent to the leading edge defined by a slot wall having a front wall portion and a back wall portion;
an insert coupled in said slot;
a crown forming an upper portion of the golf club head, extending rearward from the striking face; and
a sole forming a lower portion of the golf club head, wherein the sole comprises a rear sole portion forming an aft portion of the sole, wherein the rear sole portion extends to the sole return.
2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the insert is polymeric.
3 . The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the insert has a hardness of between 60 A and Shore 60 D.
4 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the striking face comprises a first region having a first substantially constant thickness, wherein sole return has a thickness equal to the first substantially constant thickness.
5 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the front wall portion and back wall portion form an angle such that a first distance across a top of the slot is less than a second distance across a bottom of the slot.
6 . The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein the front wall portion and the back wall portion form a first angle that is between 50 degrees and 75 degrees.
7 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the back wall portion forms a second angle with a ground plane of between 125 degrees and 140 degrees.
8 . The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein the front wall portion forms a third angle with the ground plane of between 105 degrees and 125 degrees.
9 . The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein the first region substantially covers a lower striking face portion.
10 . The golf club head of claim 9 , wherein the first substantially constant thickness is between about 2.0 mm and about 5.0 mm.
