Abstract

A magnetic top cap tray for a stepladder is disclosed. The magnetic top cap provides an area for work space or for storage of tools or materials that are metal. The disclosed top cap provides a better method of making a large area of the top cap magnetic while allowing the magnet to be more easily replaced if damaged or lost.

Claims (37)

1 . A folding stepladder comprising:

a pair of front rails connected by a plurality of steps;

a pair of rear rails connected by a plurality of cross braces;

a top cap comprising:

an upward-facing side distal to the pair of front rails and pair of rear rails;

a magnet niche;

a magnetic plate housed within the niche; and

a cover;

wherein the magnet niche is on the upward facing side of the top cap.

2 . The folding stepladder of claim 1 wherein the magnet plate is housed completely within the magnet niche.

3 . The folding stepladder of claim 1 wherein the cover is metal.

4 . The folding stepladder of claim 3 wherein the cover comprises tab and the top cap comprises tab slot to receive the cover tab.

5 . The folding stepladder of claim 4 wherein the top cap tab is bent to retain the cover on the top cap.

6 . The folding stepladder of claim 4 wherein the cover comprises a plurality of tabs and the top cap comprises a plurality of tab slots to receive the cover tabs.

7 . The folding stepladder of claim 6 wherein the magnetic plate is secured to the top cap with an adhesive.

8 . The folding stepladder of claim 2 wherein magnet cover comprises a tab and the top cap comprises tab slot to receive the magnet cover tab.

9 . A stepladder comprising:

a pair of front rails connected by a plurality of cross members;

a pair of rear rails connected by a plurality of cross members;

wherein at least one of the pair of front rails or the pair of rear rails is pivotally connected a top cap, the top cap comprising:

a depression on a top side of the top cap;

a magnetic plate resting in the depression; and

a magnet retention overlay.

10 . The stepladder of claim 9 wherein the magnet retention overlay is metal.

11 . The stepladder of claim 10 wherein the magnetic plate rests completely within the top cap depression.

12 . The stepladder of claim 9 wherein the magnet retention overlay comprises a plurality of tabs and the top cap comprises a plurality of tab slots to receive the magnet retention overlay tabs.

13 . The stepladder of claim 12 wherein the plurality of magnet retention overlay tabs are bent to retain the magnet retention overlay on the top cap.

14 . The stepladder of claim 9 wherein the magnetic plate is secured to the top cap with an adhesive.

15 . The stepladder of claim 13 wherein magnet retention overlay is secured to the top cap with adhesive.

16 . The stepladder of claim 9 wherein the magnetic plate rests completely within the top cap depression.

17 . The stepladder of claim 10 wherein the magnet retention overlay comprises tab and the top cap comprises tab slot to receive the magnet retention overlay tab.

18 . The stepladder of claim 17 wherein the magnet retention overlay is metal.

19 . A top cap for a folding ladder comprising:

a magnet recess on an upper face of the top cap;

a magnetic plate housed within the magnet recess; and

a magnet cover.

20 . The top cap for a ladder of claim 19 further comprising a metal magnet cover.
