Abstract

The present invention is a brace or spinal implant that can be inserted into vertebra that has had a cavity surgically created therein. The trapezoidal shaped spinal implant includes an opening that allows the surgical team to view the dura mater prior to packing the implant with osteogenic substances.

Claims (20)

1. A custom fitted implant, comprising a material from the group consisting of titanium alloys, stainless steel or resorbable polymers, for use in a corpectomy surgical procedure and implantation into a surgically created corpectomy cavity such that said custom fitted implant extends along a vertical axis between a superior side and an inferior side of said corpectomy cavity; said custom fitted implant, comprising: a vertical span of consecutively joined receptacles into which osteogenic substances are packed before completion of said corpectomy surgical procedure, and wherein each consecutively joined receptacle further comprises:

a) a first generally trapezoidal shaped divider;

b) a first support connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and extending in opposite directions from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider, wherein said first corner support is angled at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with a first lateral side and a short side of said trapezoidal shaped divider;

c) a second support connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and extending in opposite directions from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider, wherein said second corner support is angled at about ninety degrees to simultaneously connect with a second lateral side opposite said first lateral side and said short side of said trapezoidal shaped divider;

d) a first set of superior and inferior apertures between said first set of corner supports and said second set of corner supports, such that, prior to addition of osteogenic substances to said custom fitted implant, a surgeon can see through said first set of superior and inferior apertures;

e) a third support connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider, extending in opposite directions from said first lateral side of said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and distal from said first corner support;

f) a fourth support connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider, extending in opposite directions from said second lateral side of said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and distal from said second corner support;

g) a first brake attached to a first long side of said trapezoidal shaped divider, wherein said first brake extends laterally outward from said first lateral side of said trapezoidal shaped divider; and

h) a second set of superior and inferior apertures between said third and said fourth supports, such that, prior to addition of osteogenic substances to said custom fitted implant, a surgeon can see through said second set of superior and inferior apertures, wherein said first and said second sets of superior and inferior apertures range in cross-sectional area of from about 36 millimeters 2 to about 225 millimeters 2 .

2. The invention of claim 1 further comprising a second brake attached to a second long side of said trapezoidal shaped divider, wherein said second brake extends laterally outward from said second lateral side of said trapezoidal shaped divider.

3. The invention of claim 2 further comprising a fifth support, adjacent said first and said second corner supports, wherein said fifth support is connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and extends in opposite directions from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider.

4. The invention of claim 3 further comprising:

a) a sixth support, adjacent said first corner support and said third support, wherein said sixth support is connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and extends in opposite directions from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider; and

b) a seventh support, adjacent said second corner support and said fourth support, wherein said seventh support is connected to said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and extends in opposite directions from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider.

5. The invention of claim 4 further comprising one or more ties extending between said supports.

6. The invention of claim 5 , wherein said first set of superior and inferior apertures are of lesser cross sectional area than said second set of superior and inferior apertures.

7. The invention of claim 6 further comprising:

a) a second generally trapezoidal shaped divider generally parallel said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and connected with said first, second, third, forth, fifth, sixth and seventh supports extending in a first direction from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider; and

b) a third generally trapezoidal shaped divider generally parallel said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider and connected with said first, second, third, forth, fifth, sixth and seventh supports extending in a second direction from said first generally trapezoidal shaped divider.

8. The invention of claim 7 , wherein said second generally trapezoidal shaped divider and said third generally trapezoidal shaped divider further comprise one or more brakes.
