Abstract

A two-way satellite communication system for providing a scalable architecture is disclosed. A plurality of transceivers transmit signals over a plurality of return channels, wherein the plurality of return channels are partitioned into a plurality of return channel groups. A hub communicates with the plurality of transceivers via the plurality of return channel groups. The hub is connected to a packet switched network. Each of the plurality of transceivers performs a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups.

Claims (40)

1. A two-way satellite communication system for providing a scalable architecture, comprising:

a plurality of transceivers configured to transmit signals over a plurality of return channels, wherein the plurality of return channels are partitioned into a plurality of return channel groups; and

a hub configured to communicate with the plurality of transceivers via the plurality of return channel groups, the hub being connected to a packet switched network,

wherein each of the plurality of transceivers is configured to perform a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups, wherein the random weighted selection is based on a number of defined bursts and a collision rate on the bursts.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the hub transmits inroute group definition (IGD) packets to the transceivers, each of the IGD packets specifying the return channels associated with a particular one of the return channel groups and providing traffic loading information.

3. The system according to claim 2 wherein each of the IGD packets contains a metric field to specify the traffic loading information.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the packet switched network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

5. The system according to claim 2 wherein the hub comprises:

a plurality of return channel equipment (RCEs) configured to receive data from the return channels, wherein a plurality of return channel uplinks from the hub to the transceivers and the plurality of RCEs define a transponder set.

6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the transponder set supports two or more return channel uplinks.

7. The system according to claim 6 , wherein each of the plurality of transceivers is configured to monitor the IGD packets and to selectively switch return channel groups based upon the monitored IGD packets.

8. A transceiver apparatus for exchanging signals with a hub in a two-way satellite communication system, comprising:

a transmitting unit configured to transmit signals over a plurality of return channels to the hub, wherein the plurality of return channels are partitioned into a plurality of return channel groups; and

a receiving unit coupled to the transmitting unit and configured to communicate with the hub, the hub being connected to a packet switched network,

wherein the receiving unit is configured to perform a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups, wherein the random weighted selection is based on a number of defined bursts and a collision rate on the bursts.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the hub transmits inroute group definition (IGD) packets to the receiving unit, each of the IGD packets specifying the return channels associated with a particular one of the return channel groups and providing traffic loading information.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein each of the IGD packets contains a metric field to specify the traffic loading information.

11. The apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the packet switched network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

12. The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the hub comprises:

a plurality of return channel equipment (RCEs) configured to receive data from the return channels, wherein a plurality of return channel uplinks from the hub to the receiving unit and the plurality of RCEs define a transponder set.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12 , wherein the transponder set supports two or more return channel uplinks.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the receiving unit is configured to monitor the IGD packets and to selectively switch return channel groups based upon the monitored IGD packets.

15. A method for exchanging signals with a hub in a two-way satellite communication system, the method comprising:

monitoring inroute group definition (IGD) packets received from the hub, each of the IGD packets specifying return channels associated with one of a plurality of return channel groups and providing traffic loading information, the plurality of return channels being partitioned into the plurality of return channel groups; and

performing a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups based upon the monitoring step, wherein the random weighted selection is based on a number of defined bursts and a collision rate on the bursts.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein each of the IGD packets in the monitoring step contains a metric field to specify the traffic loading information.

17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the hub is connected to a packet switched network.

18. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the packet switched network is an Internet Protocol (IP) network.

19. A transceiver apparatus for exchanging signals with a hub in a two-way satellite communication system, comprising:

means for monitoring inroute group definition (IGD) packets received from the hub, each of the IGD packets specifying return channels associated with one of a plurality of return channel groups and providing traffic loading information, the plurality of return channels being partitioned into the plurality of return channel groups; and

means for performing a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups based upon the IGD packets, wherein the random weighted selection is based on a number of defined bursts and a collision rate on the bursts.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19 , wherein each of the IGD packets contains a metric field to specify the traffic loading information.

21. The apparatus according to claim 19 , wherein the hub is connected to a packet switched network.

22. The apparatus according to claim 21 , wherein the packet switched network is an Internet Protocol (ID) network.

23. A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions for exchanging signals with a hub in a two-way satellite communication system, the one or more sequences of one or more instructions including instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the steps of:

monitoring inroute group definition (IGD) packets received from the hub, each of the IGD packets specifying return channels associated with one of a plurality of return channel groups and providing traffic loading information, the plurality of return channels being partitioned into the plurality of return channel groups; and

performing a random weighted selection of a return channel group among the plurality of return channel groups based upon the monitoring step, wherein the random weighted selection is based on a number of defined bursts and a collision rate on the bursts.
