Abstract

A system and method adjusts the polarity of power provided over Ethernet cabling according to configuration information received.

Claims (31)

1. A method for providing power, comprising:

receiving power having an initial polarity;

providing to a user interface of a computer, a prompt for a power polarity to be provided over a connector;

receiving an indicator of the power polarity, the indicator of the power polarity being based, at least in part, on at least one user input received via the user interface;

providing, via the connector having a first at least one conductor for communicating networking signals and a second at lease one conductor for providing the power, at least a portion of the power, the portion of the power provided having a polarity based at least in part on the indicator of the power polarity, and

identifying the portion of the power being provided using at least one of:

at least one display indicator physically arranged near the connector along with at least one other display indicator that is used to display a network status associated with the networking signals; or

a single display indicator physically arranged near the connector and which is further used to display the network status.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the indicator of the power polarity selectively either: reversing the initial polarity of the power received, or maintaining the initial polarity of the power received.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the indicator of the power polarity distinguishes between:

a standards-organization-specified power standard; and

a power standard having an opposite polarity to that of the standards-organization-specified power standard.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the connector comprises an RJ-45 connector.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the at least the portion of the power further comprises:

providing the at least the portion of the power to wireless network equipment.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

isolating from the power received, at least a portion of the at least the portion of the power provided.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising:

converting a voltage of the at least the portion of the power isolated.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

filtering the at least the portion of the power provided.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein identifying the portion of the power being provided comprises at least one of:

affecting a color of the at least display indicator or the single display indicator; and/or

affecting a brightness of the at least display indicator or the single display indicator.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the prompt for the power polarity to be provided over the connector comprises at least one of:

affecting a color of the at least display indicator or the single display indicator; and/or

affecting a brightness of the at least display indicator or the single display indicator.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one display indicator is physically arranged within two inches of the connector, or the single display indicator is physically arranged within two inches of the connector.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the prompt via the user interface comprises:

providing the prompt with a browser using a web page.
