Abstract

A non-aqueous pigment dispersion includes a color pigment, a polymeric dispersant, and a dispersion synergist wherein the molecular weight of the anionic part of the dispersion synergist containing at least one carboxylate anion is smaller than 98% of the molecular weight of the color pigment and that the anionic part of the dispersion synergist has a similarity coefficient SIM of at least 0.5 with the similarity coefficient defined by: SIM = t · C S + P - C wherein, S represents the number of atoms in the anionic part of the dispersion synergist; P represents the number of atoms in the color pigment; C represents the largest number of atoms in common between the anionic part of the dispersion synergist and the color pigment as one continuous structure; and t is an integer representing the number of times that the largest number of atoms in common C fits into the organic color pigment, without using atoms of the color pigment twice. Also, methods of preparing the non-aqueous pigment dispersions.

Claims (39)

1. A non-aqueous pigment dispersion comprising:

a color pigment, a polymeric dispersant, and a dispersion synergist including an anion part and a cationic part; wherein

the molecular weight of the anionic part of the dispersion synergist containing at least one carboxylate group is smaller than 98% of the molecular weight of the color pigment; and

the anionic part of the dispersion synergist has a similarity coefficient SIM of at least 0.5 with the similarity coefficient defined by:

wherein,

S represents the number of atoms in the anionic part of the dispersion synergist;

P represents the number of atoms in the color pigment;

C represents a maximum number of atoms in common between the anionic part of the dispersion synergist and the color pigment which are bonded together as one chemical structure; and

t is an integer representing the number of times that the maximum number of atoms in common C fit into a chemical structure of organic color pigment, withoutcounting atoms of the color pigment twice.

2. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the cationic part of the dispersion synergist consists of one or more protons and/or cations to compensate for the charge of the anionic part of the dispersion synergist.

3. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 2 , wherein the cationic part of the dispersion synergist is selected from the group consisting of Li + , ammonium, and a substituted ammonium group.

The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 3 , wherein the substituted ammonium group is selected from the group consisting of + N(CH 3 ) 2 (C 18 H 37 ) 2 , + NH(CH 3 ) 2 (C 18 H 37 ), + N(CH 3 ) 2 (C 12 H 25 ) 2 , + NH(CH 3 ) 2 (C 12 H 25 ), + N(CH 3 ) 2 (C 10 H 21 ) 2 , + NH(CH 3 ) 2 (C 10 H 21 ), + N(CH 3 ) 2 (C 8 H 17 ) 2 , + NH(CH 3 ) 2 (C 8 H 17 ), + NH(C 8 H 17 ) 3 , + NH(C 10 H 21 ) 3 , + NH(C 12 H 25 ) 3 , and + NH(C 18 H 35 ) 3 .

5. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the dispersion synergist contains an aromatic acid group or a salt thereof.

6. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 5 , wherein the aromatic acid group or a salt thereof is a benzoic acid group, a phthalic acid group, an isophthalic acid group, a terephthalic acid group, or salts thereof.

7. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the color pigment is selected from the group consisting of C.I. Pigment Yellow 120, C.I. Pigment Yellow 155, C.I. Pigment Yellow 180, and C.I. Pigment Yellow 194.

8. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the dispersion synergist is represented by Formula (I):

wherein,

AR 1 and AR 2 represent a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group, and R represents a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic group, with the proviso that one of R, AR 1 , and AR 2 contains at least one carboxylate anion.

9. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 8 , wherein the dispersion synergist is represented by Formula (II):

one of R1 to R11 represents or contains at least one carboxylate anion and its proton or cation;

R1 to R11, if not representing or containing the at least one carboxylate anion and its proton or cation, are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkoxy group, an alcohol group, an ester group, an acyl group, a nitro group, an amide group, and a halogen; and

R7 and R8 may together form a heterocyclic ring.

10. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 9 , wherein the heterocyclic ring formed by R7 and R8 is imidazolone or 2,3-dihydroxypyrazine.

11. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the pigment dispersion is a curable inkjet ink.

12. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the pigment dispersion is a non-aqueous inkjet ink containing an organic solvent and/or oil.

13. The non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the dispersion synergist contains a sulphonic acid, a phosphoric acid group, or salts thereof.

14. A method of preparing the non-aqueous pigment dispersion according to claim 1 comprising:

adding the dispersion synergist to the color pigment in a dispersion medium.
