Abstract

A camera mounting assembly including a mounting bar and an adapter plate for mounting a security camera or an electrical fixture to an electrical box installed in a wall or ceiling. An elongated base portion on the mounting bar is adapted to mount to the face of a conventional electrical box and extend beyond the walls of the box. A pair of prongs extends from the base portion of the mounting bar and at least one aperture is provided on the end of the bar. The adapter plate includes an opening with an inner periphery and an inclined surface adapted for twist locking engagement with the prongs of the mounting bar. The camera mounting assembly enables the mounting of a wide range of conventional security camera housings or electrical fixtures to a conventional electrical box.

Claims (52)

1. A camera mounting assembly comprising:

a mounting bar including an elongated base member having a front surface, a rear surface, a center, and two ends;

two prongs extending from said front surface of said base member, said prongs including distal ends;

a tab orthogonal to and extending outward from said ends of each of said prongs, said tabs extending away from said center of said base member;

one or more box mounting apertures in said base member;

a second aperture in said base member at one of said ends of said base member;

fasteners for securing through said mounting apertures in said base member;

an adapter plate including a planar disk portion with a front surface and a central opening, a rear surface, an outer periphery, and a flange extending from said rear surface of said disk portion and surrounding said central opening, said flange including an inner surface;

a prong engagement member extending from said inner surface of said flange for engaging said prongs of said mounting bar; and

a peripheral wall extending rearward from said outer periphery of said disk portion of said adapter plate.

2. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 wherein said prong engagement member includes

a first end and a second end; and

an inclined surface at said first end.

3. The camera mounting assembly of claim 2 wherein said prong engagement member includes

a nub adjacent said inclined surface, said nub extending orthogonally from said prong engagement member;

a stop member extending orthogonally from said prong engagement member adjacent said second end; and

a seat extending between said nub and said stop member.

4. The camera mounting assembly of claim 3 wherein said camera mounting assembly includes a security camera for engagement with said adapter plate and said mounting bar.

5. The camera mounting assembly of claim 4 wherein

said mounting bar is secured to an electrical box by securing said fasteners through said mounting apertures of said base member and into said electrical box, said prongs of said mounting bar thereby extending outward from said electrical box;

said security camera is secured to said adapter plate by threaded fasteners;

said adapter plate with said security camera attached is secured to said mounting bar by aligning said rear surface of said adapter plate toward said mounting bar, placing said central opening of said adapter plate over said prongs of said mounting bar; and

rotating said adapter plate until said prongs are seated on said seat of said prong engagement member.

6. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 wherein said planar disk portion of said adapter plate includes a second opening therein adjacent said central opening.

7. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 including a boss surrounding said second aperture of said mounting bar.

8. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 wherein said base member of said mounting bar includes a narrow central portion and wide end portions.

9. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 wherein said mounting bar is of a length to extend substantially beyond the walls of an electrical box that it is used in conjunction with.

10. The camera mounting assembly of claim 9 wherein said length of said mounting bar is at least 4.5 inches.

11. The camera mounting assembly of claim 1 including a longitudinal rib extending from said front surface of said mounting bar.

12. A camera mounting assembly comprising

a mounting bar including an elongated base member having a front surface, a rear surface, a center, and two ends;

two prongs extending from said front surface of said base member, said prongs including distal ends;

a tab orthogonal to and extending outward from said ends of each of said prongs, said tabs extending away from said center of said base member;

one or more box mounting apertures in said base member;

a second aperture in said base member at one of said ends of said base member;

fasteners for securing through said mounting apertures in said base member;

an adapter plate including a planar disk portion with a front surface, a rear surface, and an outer periphery; and

a peripheral wall extending rearward from said outer periphery of said disk portion of said adapter plate;

said prongs of said mounting bar include an inside surface; and

said mounting bar includes a strut extending from said front surface of said mounting bar to said inside surface of each of said prongs.

13. A camera mounting assembly comprising

a mounting bar including an elongated base member having a front surface, a rear surface, a center, and two ends;

two prongs extending from said front surface of said base member, said prongs including distal ends;

a tab orthogonal to and extending outward from said ends of each of said prongs, said tabs extending away from said center of said base member;

one or more box mounting apertures in said base member;

a second aperture in said base member at one of said ends of said base member;

fasteners for securing through said mounting apertures in said base member;

an adapter plate including a planar disk portion with a front surface, a rear surface, and an outer periphery; and

a peripheral wall extending rearward from said outer periphery of said disk portion of said adapter plate;

said peripheral wall of said adapter plate includes an end; and

a recessed area between said rear surface of said disk portion and said end of said peripheral wall.

14. The camera mounting assembly of claim 13 wherein the depth of said recessed area is at least 0.25 inch.
