Abstract

A method and system for attaching a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag to an ordnance is provided. By tailoring the packaged tag and electronics to accommodate existing ordnance body cavities the integrity of the bomb casing is maintained. Likewise, fin assemblies also remain intact and are mounted in a conventional manner to the tagged ordnance. Numerous ordnance types, to include the mark (MK) 80 series general purpose bombs and equivalents are compatible with the tagging method and system described herein. Set screw mounted tail assemblies of various fin configurations are readily assembled onto the metal body casings of tagged ordinances. A curved dipole antenna provides access to external query signals and transmission of tag locating signals. As described herein, tag antennas can mount between ordnance assembly parts, adding to the ease of retrofitting existing ordnance inventory for a RFID tag localizing system.

Claims (55)

1. A method of packaging a RFID channel tag device for an ordnance, the method comprising:

encasing the RFID channel tag device in a polymer, plastic, or epoxy;

forming the encased RFID channel tag device into a rod comprising a polygon cross-section;

forming the rod into a curved rod having a radius of curvature near a radius of curvature of a metal ordnance body's aft end;

limiting a length of the rod to less than an arc length between adjacent set screws; and

limiting a height of the rod to a distance between an apex of a v bottom channel and a height of an outer flange of an aft body end plate, to form the packaged RFID channel tag device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the rod cross section is a triangle.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the rod cross section is a five sided convex polygon.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the rod cross section is a concave polygon.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

placing a first side of a flat metal curved antenna on a first flat curved insulator; and

placing a second flat curved insulator on a second side of the flat metal curved antenna; and

connecting the insulated flat metal curve antenna to the packaged RFID channel tag device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

the first and the second flat curved insulators are a polyimide tape.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

the flat metal curved antenna is formed from 0.003 inch thick metal foil.

8. A method of packaging a RFID channel tag-antenna unit for an ordnance, the method comprising:

encasing a RFID tag device in a polymer, plastic, or epoxy;

forming the encased RFID tag device into a rod comprising a polygon cross-section;

forming the rod into a curved rod having a radius of curvature near a radius of curvature of a metal ordnance body's aft end;

limiting a length of the rod to less than an arc length between adjacent set screws; and

limiting a height of the rod to a distance between an apex of a v bottom channel and a height of an outer flange of an aft body end plate, to form a packaged RFID channel tag device;

electrically connecting the RFID channel tag device to an insulated flat metal curved antenna via a connector; and

encasing the connected insulated flat metal curved antenna, the connector, and the encased device rod into an encased unit forming the package RFID channel tag-antenna unit.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

using copper foil to electrically connect the insulated flat metal curved antenna to electronics of the RFID tag device.

10. A method of packaging a two hole RFID cap tag device for an ordnance, the method comprising:

encasing the two hole RFID tag device in a polymer, plastic, or epoxy;

forming the encased two hole RFID cap tag device into a rod comprising a flat surface face;

forming the rod into a curved rod having a radius of curvature near a radius of curvature of a metal ordnance cap;

extending a length of the rod to greater than an arc length between adjacent cap holes;

limiting a rod width to less than a width of the metal ordinance cap; and

forming a first hole and a second hole through the rod, such that holes align with the adjacent cap holes, to form the packaged two hole RFID cap tag device.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising:

electrically connecting an antenna to the two hole RFID cap tag device;

encasing both the electrically connected antenna and the two hole RFID cap tag device in polymer, plastic, or epoxy; and

forming the encased antenna and two hole RFID cap tag device into the rod comprising a flat surface.

12. A method of packaging a RFID cap tag device for an ordnance, the method comprising:

encasing the RFID cap tag device in a polymer, plastic, or epoxy;

forming the encased RFID cap tag device into a rod comprising a flat surface face;

forming the rod into a curved rod having a radius of curvature near a radius of curvature of a metal ordnance cap;

extending a length of the rod to greater than an arc length between adjacent cap holes;

limiting a rod width to less than a width of the metal ordinance cap;

forming an aligning pin to protrude from the flat surface face of the rod; and

forming a hole through the rod, wherein the aligning pin and the formed hole align with the adjacent cap holes, to form the packaged RFID cap tag device.

13. The method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

electrically connecting an antenna to the RFID cap tag device;

encasing both the electrically connected antenna and the RFID cap tag device in polymer, plastic, or epoxy; and

forming the encased antenna and RFID cap tag device into the rod comprising a flat surface.

14. The method according to claim 12 , further comprising:

extending a length of the rod to encircle a fuze well.
