Abstract

A blade housing for an electronic cutting apparatus includes an outer housing having a distal end, an inner housing coupled to the inner housing and longitudinally selectively adjustable relative thereto and a blade rotatably coupled to the inner housing with a sharpened distal end. Adjustment of the inner housing relative to the outer housing adjusts an amount of the blade that protrudes from the distal end of the inner housing.

Claims (27)

1. A blade housing, comprising:

an outer housing having a distal end;

an inner housing coupled to said outer housing and longitudinally selectively adjustable relative thereto at a plurality of discrete set points;

said inner housing includes a plurality of detents and further including a biased bearing coupled to said outer housing, whereby the bearing can be selectively engaged with one of said plurality of detents by rotating said inner housing relative to said outer housing

a blade coupled to said inner housing and having a sharpened distal end;

whereby adjustment of said inner housing relative to said outer housing adjusts an amount of the blade that protrudes from the distal end of the inner housing.

2. The blade housing of claim 1 , wherein said inner housing includes an adjustment knob at a proximal end thereof.

3. The blade housing of claim 1 , wherein said inner and outer housings are threadedly engaged.

4. The blade housing of claim 1 , wherein said blade is cylindrical along a length thereof, further includes a conical proximal end and is rotatably coupled to said inner housing.

5. The blade housing of claim 4 , further including a magnet coupled to said inner housing for releasably retaining said blade within said inner housing.

6. The blade housing of claim 1 , further comprising a plunger coupled to and biased toward a proximal end of said inner housing, whereby actuation of said plunger toward a distal end of said inner housing causes said blade to protrude from said distal end of said outer housing.

The blade housing of claim 6 , further comprising a factory adjustment member threadably engaged with said inner housing for setting a position of said plunger relative to said inner housing to set a distal end of said blade in a coplanar arrangement with said distal end of said outer blade housing.

8. The blade housing of claim 1 , wherein said distal end of said outer housing defines a substantially flat surface around said distal end of said blade.

9. The blade housing of claim 8 , wherein said distal end of said outer housing includes a radiused edge around said substantially flat surface.

10. A blade retaining apparatus, comprising:

a housing having a first end, a second end and a longitudinally extending bore therein; said housing comprises an inner housing and an outer housing, said inner housing is coupled to said outer housing and longitudinally selectively adjustable relative thereto

and a cylindrical blade having a distal sharpened end rotatably coupled to said housing and at least partially positioned within said longitudinally extending bore such that at least a portion of said distal sharpened end protrudes from said second end of said housing;

wherein said inner housing is adjustable relative to said outer housing at a plurality of discrete set points to adjust an amount of the blade that protrudes from the distal end of the inner housing and said inner housing includes a plurality of detents and further including a biased bearing coupled to said outer housing, whereby the bearing can be selectively engaged with one of said plurality of detents by rotating said inner housing relative to said outer housing

said second end of said housing defining a relatively flat surface around said at least a portion of said distal sharpened end of said blade.

11. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said blade is rotatably coupled to said inner housing.

12. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said inner housing includes an adjustment knob at a proximal end thereof.

13. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said inner and outer housings are threadedly engaged.

14. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said blade includes a conical proximal end.

15. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 14 , further including a magnet coupled to said housing for releasably retaining said blade.

16. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a plunger coupled to and biased toward a proximal end of said housing, whereby actuation of said plunger toward a distal end of said inner housing causes said blade to protrude from said distal end of said housing.

17. The blade retaining apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising a factory adjustment member threadably engaged with said housing for setting a position of said plunger relative to said housing to set a distal end of said blade in a coplanar arrangement with said distal end of said housing.

18. The blade housing of claim 10 , wherein said distal end of said outer housing includes a radiused edge around said substantially flat surface.
