Abstract

An improved door assembly has a single movable door and may have a separate movable high platform threshold. The door assembly is formed of an upper door section and a lower door section which is fixed to the upper door section. A support member may be integral with or slidably engaged with the door assembly, disposed as an angle iron fixed to the door assembly, or disposed on the side of a stairwell of a rail passenger car.

Claims (10)

1. A door system for a railway vehicle having a door opening and a stairwell extending downwardly from a vehicle floor level to a bottom end of the door opening, the door system comprising:

a sliding door displaceable between open and closed positions for selectively closing the door opening;

a stairwell platform displaceable between a retracted position for clearing the stairwell and an extended position for covering the stairwell; and

means for providing a continuation of the stairwell platform when the stairwell platform is in the extended position and portions of the sliding door above and below portions of the means providing the continuation are in the open position and for clearing the door opening when the stairwell platform is in the retracted position and the sliding door is in the open position.

2. The door system of claim 1 , wherein the sliding door comprises an upper section fixed to a lower section and is configured to act as a single unit.

3. The door system of claim 2 , wherein the means comprises a threshold slidingly connected to the door.

4. The door system of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the threshold extends from an outside surface of the door.

5. The door system of claim 3 , wherein the threshold includes portions located within the door and a portion that extends from an outside surface of the door.

6. The door system of claim 3 , wherein the system is configured so that the stairwell platform may prevent the threshold from being retracted when the stairwell platform is in the extended position.

7. The door system of claim 1 , further comprising means for coupling the means for providing to the sliding door when the stairwell platform is in the retracted position.
