Abstract

A system, program product, and computer implemented method for data replication, comprising enabling a virtual service layer to consume a storage medium of a site and map the storage medium of the site as one or more virtual storage volumes, enabling the virtual service layer to present the one or more virtual storage volumes for consumption by a host, enabling a splitter of the site to intercept I/O written to the one or more virtual storage volumes, splitting intercepted I/O to a journal based replication appliance, and enabling the journal based replication appliance to create a continuous data protection image of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes.

Claims (26)

1. A system for data replication, the system comprising:

a virtual service layer; a first site, coupled to the virtual service layer, the first site comprising: a splitter; a storage medium; a journal based replication appliance; and computer-executable logic operating in memory, wherein the computer executable program logic is configured for execution of: enabling the virtual service layer to consume the storage medium and map the storage mediums as one or more virtual storage volumes; enabling the virtual service layer to present the one or more virtual storage volumes for consumption; enabling the splitter to intercept I/O written to the one or more virtual storage volumes; splitting intercepted I/O to a journal based replication appliance; and enabling the journal based replication appliance to create a continuous data protection image of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; a second site coupled to the virtual service layer comprising: a splitter; a storage medium; and a journal based replication appliance; and wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of: enabling the virtual storage volumes to be accessible at the second site; wherein one or more the virtual storage volume are mirrored at the second site by the virtual service layer; enabling the journal based replication appliance of the second site to create an independent continuous data protection image at the second site of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; upon failover of the first site, putting the virtual service layer into a global fail all mode; moving the splitter at the first site being failed over to splitter fail all mode; keeping the splitter at the second site of the virtual service layer splitting and replicating from the virtual storage volume of the first site to the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site; and replicating from the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site a replicated copy of the mirrored virtual storage volume.

2. The system of claim 1 where the second site is geographically disparate from the first site.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of: breaking the mirroring of the one or more the virtual storage volume between the first site and second site and flushing the write cache and invalidating a read cache to allow image access on the first site.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of: disabling a read and write cache for IOs originated from the DPA/RPA when in virtual access mode.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of:

restoring the mirroring of the one or more the virtual storage volume between the first site and second site;

enabling the journal based replication device of the second site to not close snapshots until the mirror is restored; and

sending the notifications whether mirror is in consistent state in band with TO to the journal based replication device of the second site on the second site.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of:

re-enabling the cache for RPA TO when exiting virtual access mode.

7. The system of claim 4 wherein the journal based replication device of the second site is a virtual appliance running as a set of processes inside the virtual service layer.

8. A computer implemented method for data replication, the method comprising: enabling a virtual service layer to consume a storage medium of a site and map the storage medium of the site as one or more virtual storage volumes; enabling the virtual service layer to present the one or more virtual storage volumes for consumption by a host; enabling a splitter of the site to intercept I/O written to the one or more virtual storage volumes; splitting intercepted I/O to a journal based replication appliance; enabling the journal based replication appliance to create a continuous data protection image of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; enabling the virtual storage volumes to be accessible at a second site, the second site having a journal based replication appliance; wherein one or more the virtual storage volume are mirrored at the second site by the virtual service layer; enabling the journal based replication appliance of the second site to create a second continuous data protection image at the second site of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; upon failover of the first site, putting the virtual service layer into a global fail all mode; moving the splitter at the first site being failed over to splitter fail all mode; keeping the splitter at the second site of the virtual service layer splitting and replicating from the virtual storage volume of the first site to the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site; and replicating from the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site a replicated copy of the mirrored virtual storage volume.

9. The method of claim 8 where the second site is geographically disparate from the first site.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of: breaking the mirroring of the one or more the virtual storage volume between the first site and second site and invalidating a read cache to allow image access.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of: disabling a read and write cache for IOs originated from the DPA/RPA when in virtual access mode.

12. A computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with computer executable program code for implementing consistent snapshots in a replication environment, the replication environment having a production site and a splitter, the production site having storage mediums, the code: enabling a virtual service layer to consume a storage medium of a site and map the storage medium of the site as one or more virtual storage volumes; enabling the virtual service layer to present the one or more virtual storage volumes for consumption by a host; enabling a splitter of the site to intercept I/O written to the one or more virtual storage volumes; splitting intercepted I/O to a journal based replication appliance; enabling the journal based replication appliance to create a continuous data protection image of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; enabling the virtual storage volumes to be accessible at a second site, the second site having a journal based replication appliance; wherein one or more the virtual storage volume are mirrored at the second site by the virtual service layer; enabling the journal based replication appliance of the second site to create a second continuous data protection image at the second site of the data written to one or more virtual storage volumes; upon failover of the first site, putting the virtual service layer into a global fail all mode; moving the splitter at the first site being failed over to splitter fail all mode; keeping the splitter at the second site of the virtual service layer splitting and replicating from the virtual storage volume of the first site to the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site; and replicating from the mirrored virtual storage volume on the second site a replicated copy of the mirrored virtual storage volume.

13. The computer program product of claim 12 , where the second site is geographically disparate from the first site.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of:

re-enabling the cache for RPA TO when exiting virtual access mode.

15. The system of claim 5 wherein the computer-executable logic operating is further configured for execution of:

receiving an IO;

determining if the IO has an inconsistency bit;

based on the determining, checking to see if the splitter is in consistent minor state and flushing all IOs; and

resuming to close snapshots.
