Abstract

Drug delivery devices and methods are provided for delivering a substance into a human or animal tissue. The device includes a gas source comprising a gas or capable of selectively producing a gas. The device also includes a drug source positioned and configured to release a drug into the gas. The drug source includes a release-activatable tape having the drug disposed thereon. The device also includes a first collimator fluidly connected with the gas source. The first collimator, which has an inlet end and an outlet end, is adapted to form a collimated gas stream comprising the drug in the gas.

Claims (33)

1. A drug delivery device for transdermal drug delivery through a skin comprising:

a gas source comprising a gas or capable of selectively producing a gas;

a drug source positioned and configured to release a drug into the gas, the drug source comprising a release-activatable tape having the drug disposed thereon; and

a collimator fluidly connected with the gas source, the collimator comprising a plurality of conduits adapted to form a plurality collimated gas streams comprising the drug in the gas, the collimator having an inlet end and an outlet end.

2. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the release-activatable tape comprises a UV-sensitive, heat-sensitive, or electrical-sensitive material.

3. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the drug source is positioned and configured to release the drug into the gas between the inlet end and the outlet end of the collimator.

4. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the release-activatable tape is positioned within or adjacent to the collimator.

5. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , further comprising a controller adapted to actuate the release of the drug from the release-activatable tape.

6. The drug delivery device of claim 5 , wherein the controller is adapted to actuate the release of the drug from the release-activatable tape after the gas has begun to pass through the collimator.

7. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of conduits extends between the inlet end and the outlet end of the collimator, each conduit having an inlet at the inlet end of the collimator and an outlet at the outlet end of the collimator.

8. The drug delivery device of claim 7 , wherein the drug is contained in one of the plurality of conduits.

9. The drug delivery device of claim 7 , wherein the drug is in the form of a solid particle having a volume average diameter equal to or less than one-fifth of a width of one of the plurality of conduits.

10. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , further comprising a skin interfacing surface adapted to mate with the skin and align the collimator with the skin such that the drug in the plurality of collimated gas streams penetrates the skin in a direction substantially perpendicular to the skin.

11. The drug delivery device of claim 10 , further comprising a standoff between the collimator and the skin interfacing surface such that a gap is provided between the outlet end of the collimator and the skin when the skin interfacing surface is placed against the skin.

12. The drug delivery device of claim 11 , wherein the gap is about 0.5 mm to about 10 mm.

13. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the drug is in the form of a solid particle having a volume average diameter of about 0.1 micron to about 250 microns.

14. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the collimator comprises a venturi between the inlet end and the outlet end.

15. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein each of the collimated gas streams has a diameter of about 5 μm to about 500 μm over a distance of about 0.5 mm to about 10 mm from the outlet end of the collimator.

16. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the collimator and the drug source are provided in a removable cartridge.

17. The drug delivery device of claim 1 , wherein the release-activatable tape is configured to be activated to release the drug into the plurality of conduits after the gas has begun to pass through the plurality of conduits.

18. A method of delivering a substance into a human or animal tissue comprising:

delivering a pressurized gas into a plurality of conduits of a collimator having an inlet end and an outlet end to produce a plurality of collimated streams of gas; and then

releasing a drug into the plurality of collimated streams of gas from a location adjacent to the collimator between the inlet end and outlet end to form a plurality of collimated streams of the drug entrained in the gas such that the drug penetrates the tissue, wherein the drug is released from a release-activatable tape having the drug disposed thereon.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of collimated streams of gas are produced by expanding the pressurized gas through a venturi in each of the plurality of conduits.

The method of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of conduits extends between the inlet end and the outlet end of the collimator, and wherein the drug is in the form of a solid particle having a volume average diameter equal to or less than one-fifth of a width of one of the plurality of conduits.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein each of the collimated gas streams has a diameter of about 5 μm to about 500 μm over a distance of about 0.5 mm to about 10 mm from the outlet end of the collimator.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein the tissue is human skin.

23. The method of claim 18 , wherein the release-activatable tape is actuated to release the drug after the pressurized gas has begun to pass through the collimator.

24. A drug delivery device for transdermal drug delivery through a skin comprising:

a gas source comprising a gas or capable of selectively producing a gas;

a drug source positioned and configured to release a drug into the gas, the drug source comprising a release-activatable tape having the drug disposed thereon; and

a collimator fluidly connected with the gas source, the collimator comprising a plurality of conduits adapted to form a plurality of collimated gas streams comprising the drug in the gas, the collimator having a inlet end and an outlet end;

wherein the release-activatable tape is operably connected to the plurality of conduits and configured to be activated to release the drug into the plurality of conduits.
