Abstract

An example wireless device includes a radio receiver to measure a signal quality of a data signal independent of a direct frequency measurement, the signal quality correlated to an offset between a transmitter reference frequency and a receiver reference frequency but not indicative of a direction of the offset. The example wireless device further includes a reference frequency generator to determine from the measured signal quality that a previous adjustment to the receiver reference frequency in a first direction has worsened the signal quality, and responsive to that determination adjust the receiver reference frequency in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.

a radio receiver configured to:

receive, using the receiver reference frequency, a data signal that was transmitted using a transmitter reference frequency; and

measure a signal quality of the data signal independent of a direct frequency measurement, the signal quality correlated to an offset between the transmitter reference frequency and the receiver reference frequency but not indicative of a direction of the offset,

the reference frequency generator configured to determine from the measured signal quality that a previous adjustment to the receiver reference frequency in a first direction has worsened the signal quality, and responsive to that determination selectively vary a capacitance to adjust the receiver reference frequency in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

2. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the radio receiver is configured to measure a bit error rate (BER) of the data signal to measure the signal quality of the data signal.

3. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the radio receiver is configured to measure a received signal strength of the data signal to measure the signal quality of the data signal.

4. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the reference frequency generator includes a crystal oscillator to generate the receiver reference frequency, the reference frequency generator configured to adjust the receiver reference frequency by selectively adding a load capacitance to or removing the load capacitance from the crystal oscillator according to the measured signal quality.

5. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the radio receiver is configured to monitor the signal quality for different transmitted data signals and the reference frequency generator is configured to responsively refine the receiver reference frequency until the signal quality reaches a predetermined level.

6. The wireless device of claim 5 , wherein the radio receiver is configured to re-measure the signal quality of the data signal after the reference frequency generator has adjusted the and the receiver reference frequency in the second direction, and the reference frequency generator is configured to determine that the adjustment to the reference frequency in the second direction has improved the signal quality and responsive to that determination, further adjust the reference frequency in the second direction.

7. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the radio receiver includes a variable gain amplifier that reduces a gain applied to the data signal while the reference frequency generator makes adjustments to the receiver reference frequency.

8. The wireless device of claim 7 , wherein the variable gain amplifier increases the gain applied to the data signal after the reference frequency generator finishes making adjustments to the receiver reference frequency.

9. The wireless device of claim 1 , wherein the reference frequency generator adjusts the receiver reference frequency through varying an output frequency of a frequency synthesizer.

10. A method of a tuning a radio, the method comprising:

measuring a bit error rate (BER) of a first data transmission between a transmitting device and a receiving device;

using the measured BER of the first data transmission to estimate a first amount of frequency offset between the transmitting device and the receiving device;

adjusting a reference frequency in a first direction based on the measured BER;

measuring a BER of a second data transmission between the transmitting device and the receiving device;

using the measured BER of the second data transmission to estimate a second amount of frequency offset between the transmitting device and the receiving device; and

adjusting the reference frequency in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction responsive to the BER of the first data transmission being greater than the BER of the second data transmission.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the adjusting of the reference frequency in the second direction that is opposite to the first direction responsive to the BER of the first data transmission being greater than the BER of the second data transmission includes comparing the BER of the first data transmission with the BER of the second data transmission.

12. The method of claim 10 , including repeatedly adjusting the reference frequency based on estimated amounts of reference frequency offset between the transmitting device and the receiving, until a predetermined level of reference frequency offset is estimated.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the adjusting of the reference frequency in the first direction is responsive to the measured BER meeting a threshold BER level.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the measuring of the BER of the first data transmission is responsive to a change in temperature measured at the receiving device.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the measuring of the BER of the first data transmission is responsive to a change in temperature measured at the transmitting device.

16. The method of claim 10 including periodically initiating the reference frequency monitoring and adjustment after a fixed period of time.

17. A radio system, comprising:

a radio receiver configured to receive a radio transmission from a radio transmitter and to process the radio transmission using a reference frequency of the radio receiver;

a trimming circuit configured to vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver; and

a processing element configured to:

calculate a first signal integrity of the radio transmission,

infer, based on the first calculated signal integrity, a first frequency offset between the reference frequency of the radio transmitter and the reference frequency of the radio receiver,

signal the trimming circuit to vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver based on the inferred first frequency offset,

calculate a second signal integrity of the radio transmission after the trimming circuit has varied the reference frequency of the radio receiver,

infer, based on a difference between the first calculated signal integrity and the second calculated signal integrity, a second frequency offset between the reference frequency of the radio transmitter and the varied reference frequency of the radio receiver, and

signal the trimming circuit to further vary the reference frequency of the radio receiver based on the inferred second frequency offset.
