Abstract

A technique for implementing an optical virtual private network is disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the technique may be realized by a method comprising the steps of managing at least one client edge-virtual private network at a client edge by a service provider; and supporting a set of client edge-users at each client edge-virtual private network at each client edge wherein each client edge provides at least one virtual private network service to each client edge-user; wherein each client edge determines connectivity associated with each client edge-user and the service provider establishes the connectivity determined by each client edge.

Claims (40)

1. A method of implementing an optical virtual private network, the method comprising steps of:

providing an optical virtual private network between client edge (CE) nodes of a carrier network, each CE node comprising at least one processor;

a first CE node implementing a client edge-virtual private network (CE-VPN), wherein the CE-VPN provides an optical virtual private network service through the optical virtual private network;

the first CE node associating a set of at least one client edge-user (CE-User) with the CE-VPN;

the first CE node providing the optical private network service to each of the set of at least one CE-Users, and determining connectivity between each CE-User;

establishing the connectivity determined by the first CE node;

implementing a discovery mechanism for determining the set of at least one CE-User; and

enabling a first CE-User to request a connection with a second CE-User, wherein the first CE-User and the second CE-User are associated with the CE-VPN.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the connection between the first CE-VPN and the second CE-VPN is established without intervention from a third party.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a step of providing membership information associated with at least one of the CE-Users to a third party, wherein the membership information comprises one of a virtual private network identifier and a global unique identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first CE node uses a private address to request connectivity to a second CE node.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a connection with the first CE node from a network associated with a third party is established via a transport network assigned address.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first CE node comprises one or more of a router, a cross connect device and a switch.

7. A non-transitory processor readable storage medium storing software instructions for controlling a processor to execute the method recited in claim 1 .

8. A system for implementing a carrier's carrier Optical Virtual Private Network, the system comprising:

an optical virtual private network between client edge (CE) nodes of a carrier network, each CE node comprising at least one processor;

a first CE node of the carrier network being configured to:

implement a client edge-virtual private network (CE-VPN), wherein the CE-VPN provides an optical virtual private network service through the optical virtual private network;

associate a set of at least one client edge-user (CE-User) with the CE-VPN;

provide the optical private network service to each of the set of at least one CE-Users, and determine connectivity between each CE-User;

establish the determined connectivity;

a discovery mechanism for determining the set of at least one CE-User;

the first CE node being further configured to enable a first CE-User to request a connection with a second CE-User, wherein the first CE-User and the second CE-User are associated with the CE-VPN.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the connection between the first CE-User and the second CE-User is established without intervention from a third party.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first CE node is further configured to provide membership information associated with at least one of the CE-Users to a third party, wherein the membership information comprises one of a virtual private network identifier and a global unique identifier.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first CE node is configured to use a private address to request connectivity to a second CE node.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein a connection with the first CE node from a network associated with a third party is established via a transport network assigned address.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first CE node comprises one or more of a router, a cross connect device and a switch.

14. An article of manufacture for implementing a carrier's carrier Optical Virtual Private Network, the article of manufacture comprising:

at least one non-transitory processor readable storage medium; and

software instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory processor readable storage medium;

wherein the software instructions are configured to cause at least one processor to execute the steps of:

providing an optical virtual private network between client edge (CE) nodes of a carrier network;

controlling a first CE node of the carrier network to:

implement a client edge-virtual private network (CE-VPN), wherein the CE-VPN provides an optical virtual private network service through the optical virtual private network;

associate a set of at least one client edge-user (CE-User) with the CE-VPN; and

provide the optical private network service to each of the set of at least one CE-Users, and determining connectivity between each CE-User;

establishing the connectivity determined by the first CE node;

implementing a discovery mechanism for determining the set of at least one CE-User; and

enabling a first CE-User to request a connection with a second CE-User, wherein the first CE-User and the second CE-User are associated with the CE-VPN.
