Abstract

Commissioning a lighting system is disclosed. A user can be provided with a pointing device capable of emitting or returning a signal which can be received by detectors co-located with each fixture in the lighting system. The user can add a fixture to a group by aiming the pointing device at the fixture when the fixture is not assigned to the group, and the user can remove a fixture from a group in the same way when the fixture was previously assigned to the group. Additional user gestures are also disclosed.

Claims (40)

1. A lighting system comprising:

a plurality of fixtures;

a plurality of sensors, a respective one of the sensors being associated with a respective one of the fixtures;

a processor; and

a commissioning system that runs on the processor, the commissioning system configured to perform operations comprising:

displaying on a user display a list of groups of the fixtures;

entering a commissioning mode for a first one of the groups of the fixtures in response to receiving a user selection of the first one of the groups of the fixtures from the list of groups of the fixtures;

receiving signals from a first subset of the sensors in response to a pointing device that points to the first subset of the sensors;

associating the fixtures that are associated with the first subset of the sensors with the first one of the groups of the fixtures;

determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished, independent of receiving a user selection on the user display of a group of the fixtures other than the first one of the groups; and

performing the entering, the receiving and the associating for a second one of the groups of the fixtures and a second subset of the sensors, in response to the determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished,

wherein the determining comprises determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished in response to an occupancy sensor in or associated with the first one of the groups of the fixtures detecting an occupant leaving.

2. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the pointing device comprises a flashlight that emits visible light.

3. The lighting system of claim 2 , wherein the visible light emitted by the pointing device comprises embedded data that comprises a code identifying the first one of the groups of the fixtures.

4. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the pointing device comprises a display screen configured to emit visible light.

5. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the pointing device comprises a laser pointer that emits visible light.

6. The lighting system of claim 1 wherein the receiving comprises serially receiving signals from a first subset of the sensors in response to a pointing device that serially points to the first subset of the sensors.

7. The lighting system of claim 1 wherein the operations further comprise:

removing a fixture from the first one of the groups of fixtures in response to receiving a signal from a pointing device at a sensor that is associated with the fixture.

8. A method of commissioning a lighting system that includes a processor, a plurality of fixtures and a plurality of sensors, a respective one of the sensors being associated with a respective one of the fixtures, the method comprising the following operations that are performed by the processor:

displaying on a user display a list of groups of the fixtures;

entering a commissioning mode for a first one of the groups of the fixtures in response to receiving a user selection of the first one of the groups of the fixtures from the list of groups of the fixtures;

receiving signals from a first subset of the sensors in response to a pointing device that points to the first subset of the sensors;

associating the fixtures that are associated with the first subset of the sensors with the first one of the groups of the fixtures;

determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished, independent of receiving a user selection on the user display of a group of the fixtures other than the first one of the groups; and

performing the entering, the receiving and the associating for a second one of the groups of the fixtures and a second subset of the sensors, in response to the determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished,

wherein the determining comprises determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished in response to an occupancy sensor in or associated with the first one of the groups of the fixtures detecting an occupant leaving.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the associating further comprises storing identifiers of the fixtures that are associated with the first subset of the sensors in a distributed hash table.

10. A lighting system comprising:

a plurality of fixtures;

a plurality of sensors, a respective one of the sensors being associated with a respective one of the fixtures;

a processor; and

a commissioning system that runs on the processor, the commissioning system configured to perform operations comprising:

displaying on a user display a list of groups of the fixtures;

entering a commissioning mode for a first one of the groups of the fixtures in response to receiving a user selection of the first one of the groups of the fixtures from the list of groups of the fixtures;

receiving signals from a first subset of the sensors in response to a pointing device that points to the first subset of the sensors;

associating the fixtures that are associated with the first subset of the sensors with the first one of the groups of the fixtures;

determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished, independent of receiving a user selection on the user display of a group of the fixtures other than the first one of the groups; and

performing the entering, the receiving and the associating for a second one of the groups of the fixtures and a second subset of the sensors, in response to the determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished,

wherein the determining comprises determining that the commissioning mode for the first one of the groups is finished in response to an occupancy sensor that is not in or associated with the first one of the groups of the fixtures detecting an occupant.
