Abstract

A real time medical communication system for sending Notifications of medical Alerts includes a data translation layer for receiving real time medical data from one or more sources via a network and an Alerts engine. The Alerts engine may include a message processing module including an entity extraction module configured to extract entities from the real time medical data; and a fragment generation module configured to define fragments comprising events of interest for defining one or more medical Alerts. The Alerts engine may further include an Alert generation module that may include fragment query and evaluation modules for analyzing received real time medical data for defined fragments and generating one or more medical Alerts therefrom. A Notification module may also be provided for sending Notifications of Alerts to users.

Claims (44)

1. A real time medical communication system for sending notifications of medical alerts, comprising:

a data translation layer for receiving real time medical data from one or more sources via a network, wherein the data translation layer transforms the received real time medical data to rows and columns of a database;

an alerts engine configured to create fragments from the rows and columns of the database based at least in part on one or more fragment definitions, the fragments comprising events of interest for medical alerts, analyze the fragments relative to medical criteria for alert generation, generate one or more medical alerts that satisfy the medical criteria for alert generation, and determine, for each generated medical alert and based on notification criteria, whether a corresponding notification is to be sent; and

a notification module for sending notifications of generated medical alerts to users, wherein the medical criteria for alert generation and the notification criteria are user-configurable on a patient-by-patient basis.

2. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

a configuration module coupled to receive user configuration settings from one or more caregivers, the user configuration settings individualized on a caregiver-by-caregiver basis.

3. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the one or more medical alerts comprise one or more selected fragments.

4. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more medical alerts is stored as a record in a database.

5. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the one or more medical alerts and the notifications of alerts are independently configurable.

6. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

notification routing rules set by an individual user, the notification routing rules being overridable by a hospital communicatively connected to the real time medical communication system.

7. A real time medical communication system in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

an interface configured for delivering the one or more medical alerts via one or more media, the one or more media including mobile devices.

8. A real time medical communication method for generating notifications of medical Alerts, comprising:

receiving, by a real time medical communication system, real time medical data from one or more sources via a network, the real time medical communication system embodied on one or more server machines each having at least one processor and non-transitory computer memory;

the real time medical communication system transforming the received real time medical data to rows and columns of a database;

creating, by the real time medical communication system, fragments from the rows and columns of the database based at least in part on one or more fragment definitions, the fragments comprising events of interest for medical alerts;

analyzing, by the real time medical communication system, the fragments relative to medical criteria for alert generation;

generating, by the real time medical communication system, one or more medical alerts that satisfy the medical criteria for alert generation;

determining, for each generated medical alert and based on notification criteria, whether a corresponding notification is to be sent; and

sending, by the real time medical communication system, notifications of generated medical alerts to users, wherein the medical criteria for alert generation and the notification criteria are user-configurable on a patient-by-patient basis.

9. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving user configuration settings from one or more caregivers, the user configuration settings individualized on a caregiver-by-caregiver basis.

10. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein the one or more medical alerts comprise one or more selected fragments.

11. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more medical alerts is stored as a record in a database.

12. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , wherein the one or more medical alerts and the notifications of alerts are independently configurable.

13. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , further comprising:

allowing a hospital communicatively connected to the real time medical communication system to override notification routing rules set by an individual user.

14. A real time medical communication method in accordance with claim 8 , further comprising:

presenting the one or more medical alerts via one or more media, the one or more media including mobile devices.

15. A computer program product including one or more nontransitory machine readable media storing instructions for causing a real time medical communication system embodied on one or more server machines to perform:

receiving real time medical data from one or more sources via a network;

transforming the received real time medical data to rows and columns of a database creating fragments from the rows and columns of the database based at least in part on one or more fragment definitions, the fragments comprising events of interest for medical alerts;

analyzing the fragments relative to medical criteria for alert generation;

generating one or more medical alerts that satisfy the medical criteria for alert generation;

determining, for each generated medical alert and based on notification criteria, whether a corresponding notification is to be sent; and

sending notifications of generated medical alerts to users, wherein the medical criteria for alert generation and the notification criteria are user-configurable on a patient-by-patient basis.

16. A computer program product in accordance with claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the real time medical communication system to perform:

receiving user configuration settings from one or more caregivers, the user configuration settings individualized on a caregiver-by-caregiver basis.

17. A computer program product in accordance with claim 15 , wherein the one or more medical alerts comprise one or more selected fragments.

18. A computer program product in accordance with claim 17 , wherein each of the one or more medical alerts is stored as a record in a database.

19. A computer program product in accordance with claim 18 , wherein the one or more medical alerts and the notifications of alerts are independently configurable.

20. A computer program product in accordance with claim 19 , wherein the instructions further cause the real time medical communication system to perform:

allowing a hospital communicatively connected to the real time medical communication system to override Notification routing rules set by an individual user.
