Abstract

Optical waveguides can extend alongside one another in sufficient proximity such that light couples between or among them as crosstalk. The electromagnetic field associated with light flowing in one optical waveguide can extend to an adjacent optical waveguide and induce unwanted light flow. The optical waveguide receiving the crosstalk can comprise a phase shifting capability, such as a longitudinal variation in refractive index, situated between two waveguide lengths. Crosstalk coupled onto the first waveguide length can flow through the refractive index variation, be phase shifted, and then flow onto the second waveguide length. The phase shifted crosstalk flowing on the second waveguide can meet other crosstalk that has coupled directly onto the second waveguide segment. The phase difference between the two crosstalks can suppress crosstalk via destructive interference. Destructive interference can also result from disposing a phase shifting provision in a crosstalk coupling path located between two optical waveguides.

Claims (15)

1. An optical communication system, comprising:

a plurality of first optical waveguides; and

a plurality of second optical waveguides, the first optical waveguides and the second optical waveguides being disposed in an alternating manner, each second optical waveguide comprising a first section and a second section with a phase shifter interposed between the first section and the second section, the phase shifter providing a predetermined phase shift at a predetermined wavelength, wherein the first optical waveguides do not include a phase shifter.

2. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a length, the phase shifter has a length, and the second section has a length, and wherein the length of the phase shifter is shorter than at least one of the first section or the second section.

3. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a length, the phase shifter has a length, and the second section has a length, and wherein the length of the phase shifter is longer than at least one of the first section or the second section.

4. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a length and the second section has a different length.

5. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a length and the second section has a same length.

6. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a first refractive index, the second section has a second refractive index, and the phase shifter comprises a third optical waveguide having a length and a third refractive index, wherein the third refractive index is approximately uniform over the length.

7. The optical communication system of claim 1 wherein, for at least one second optical waveguide, the first section has a first refractive index, the second section has a second refractive index, and the phase shifter comprises a third optical waveguide having a length and a third refractive index, wherein the third refractive index varies over the length.

8. The optical communication system of claim 7 wherein the third refractive index varies over the length in accordance with a Gaussian function.

9. An optical communication system, comprising:

a first optical waveguide to transmit a first plurality of optical signals having different wavelengths with respect to each other, the different wavelengths being in an operating wavelength range;

a second optical waveguide to transmit a second plurality of optical signals having different wavelengths with respect to each other, the different wavelengths also being in the operating wavelength range; and

a phase shifter associated with the second optical waveguide, the phase shifter providing a predetermined phase shift at a wavelength approximately in the middle of the operating wavelength range, the first optical waveguide not being associated with a phase shifter.

10. The optical communication system of claim 9 wherein at least one of the first optical waveguide or the second optical waveguide transmits optical signals in a first direction at a first wavelength and in a second, reverse direction at a second wavelength, and wherein the other of the first optical waveguide or the second optical waveguide transmits optical signals at a wavelength which is between the first wavelength and the second wavelength.
