Opposed piston engine and elements thereof
An opposed piston engine includes an engine housing, at least one cylinder housing coupled to the engine housing, and at least one cylinder supported by the engine housing and by the cylinder housing along an exterior of the engine housing.
1. An opposed piston engine comprising:
an engine housing;
at least one cylinder housing coupled to a first portion of the engine housing; and
at least one cylinder directly supported by and extending between the cylinder housing and a second portion of the engine housing different from the first portion, along an exterior of the engine housing,
wherein said cylinder housing is fixed about a median portion of the at least one cylinder, and, wherein the engine housing second portion is structured to provide a mounting structure for a portion of an associated crankshaft operatively coupled to a piston positioned in the at least one cylinder, and, wherein the engine housing first portion encloses a gear train operatively coupled to the crankshaft so as to rotate responsive to rotation of the crankshaft, the gear train including a plurality of gears, each of the gears having an axis of rotation extending in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.
2. The engine of claim 1 further comprising at least one valve mechanism operatively coupled to the gear train so as to be operable responsive to rotation of the gears in the gear train.
3. The engine of claim 1 further comprising at least one camming element rotatably mounted along an exterior of the at least one cylinder.
4. The engine of claim 1 wherein the at least one cylinder has a first end and a second end opposite the first end, the engine housing directly supports cylinder first end and the cylinder second end, and wherein the cylinder housing directly supports the at least one cylinder between first and second ends.
5. The engine of claim 1 wherein the engine is an inwardly opposed piston engine.
6. The engine of claim 1 wherein the at least one cylinder is supported by the engine housing such that the cylinder is spaced apart from the housing first portion.
7. An opposed piston engine comprising:
an engine housing;
at least one cylinder housing coupled to a first portion of the engine housing; and
at least one cylinder directly supported by and extending between the cylinder housing and a second portion of the engine housing different from the first portion, along an exterior of the engine housing,
wherein said cylinder housing is fixed about a median portion of the at least one cylinder, and, wherein the engine housing second portion is structured to provide a mounting structure for a portion of an associated crankshaft operatively coupled to a piston positioned in the at least one cylinder, and, wherein the first portion of the engine housing encloses a gear train operatively coupled to the crankshaft so as to rotate responsive to rotation of the crankshaft, and wherein the engine further comprises at least one camming element rotatably mounted exterior of the engine housing and operatively coupled to the gear train so as to rotate responsive to rotation of the gear train.
8. The engine of claim 7 further comprising at least one valve mechanism operatively coupled to the at least one camming element so as to be operable responsive to rotation of the at least one camming element.
9. The engine of claim 8 wherein the at least one valve mechanism includes a follower configured for engaging the at least one camming element, and wherein the at least one valve mechanism is operable responsive to the engagement between the follower and the at least one camming element.
10. An opposed piston engine comprising:
an engine housing;
at least one cylinder housing coupled to a first portion of the engine housing; and
at least one cylinder directly supported by and extending between the cylinder housing and a second portion of the engine housing different from the first portion, along an exterior of the engine housing,
wherein the engine housing first portion encloses a gear train operatively coupled to the crankshaft so as to rotate responsive to rotation of the crankshaft, the gear train including a plurality of gears, each of the gears having an axis of rotation extending in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.
11. The engine of claim 10 further comprising at least one valve mechanism operatively coupled to the gear train so as to be operable responsive to rotation of the gears in the gear train.
