Foil-based metallization of solar cells
View Patent ↗Approaches for the foil-based metallization of solar cells and the resulting solar cells are described. In an example, a solar cell includes a substrate. A plurality of alternating N-type and P-type semiconductor regions is disposed in or above the substrate. A conductive contact structure is disposed above the plurality of alternating N-type and P-type semiconductor regions. The conductive contact structure includes a plurality of metal seed material regions providing a metal seed material region disposed on each of the alternating N-type and P-type semiconductor regions. A metal foil is disposed on the plurality of metal seed material regions, the metal foil having anodized portions isolating metal regions of the metal foil corresponding to the alternating N-type and P-type semiconductor regions.
1. A solar cell, comprising:
a substrate;
a plurality of semiconductor regions above a surface of the substrate, wherein individual ones of the plurality of semiconductor regions are separated from one another by a corresponding one of a first plurality of regions; and
a plurality of metal foil portions above and electrically connected to the plurality of semiconductor regions, wherein individual ones of the plurality of metal foil portions correspond to individual ones of the plurality of semiconductor regions, wherein individual ones of the plurality of metal foil portions are separated from one another by a corresponding one of a second plurality of regions, and wherein the second plurality of regions is substantially aligned with the first plurality of regions over the surface of the substrate.
2. The solar cell of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of metal foil portions is a plurality of aluminum foil portions.
3. The solar cell of claim 1 , further comprising:
a plurality of metal seed material regions on the plurality of semiconductor regions, wherein individual ones of the plurality of metal seed material regions correspond to individual ones of the plurality of semiconductor regions, wherein the plurality of metal foil portions is on the plurality of metal seed material regions, and wherein individual ones of the plurality of metal foil portions correspond to individual ones of the plurality of metal seed material regions.
4. The solar cell of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of metal seed material regions comprises aluminum.
5. The solar cell of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of metal foil portions is a plurality of aluminum foil portions.
6. The solar cell of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of metal foil portions is spot welded to the plurality of metal seed material regions.
7. The solar cell of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of outer surfaces of the plurality of metal foil portions is anodized.
8. The solar cell of claim 7 , wherein all exposed outer surfaces of the plurality of metal foil portions are anodized.
9. The solar cell of claim 1 , wherein exposed outer surfaces of the plurality of metal foil portions are not anodized.
10. The solar cell of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of semiconductor regions comprises polycrystalline silicon.
