Abstract

An apparatus for applying periodic pressure to the limb of a patient includes a cuff which has a bladder, the cuff is shaped and dimensioned to wrap around the limb of the patient. The apparatus also includes a pump which inflates the bladder in accordance with a pressure application mode which is selected by the patient. In one embodiment a plurality of pressure application modes are provided. The patient can select which particular pressure application mode the apparatus will use. In another embodiment, the maximum cuff pressure is 55 mmHg. In another embodiment, two cycles of pressure application and removal are repeated every minute. In another embodiment, pressure is applied and removed in step fashion. In another embodiment, the pump is capable of increasing cuff pressure from 0 mmHg to 55 mmHg within two seconds. In accordance with another embodiment, a display on the apparatus shows real time cuff pressure, the selected pressure application mode, and cumulative hours of apparatus operation. In another embodiment, a pressure switch ensures that the cuff is properly wrapped around the limb of the patient.

Claims (55)

1. An apparatus for applying periodic pressure to the limb of a patient, comprising:

a cuff having a bladder, said cuff shaped and dimensioned to wrap around the limb of the patient;

a pump for inflating said bladder to a maximum cuff pressure, said maximum cuff pressure being 55 mmHg;

a plurality of pressure application modes each of which control operation of said pump;

a pressure application mode selector disposed at said cuff; and,

at least one of said plurality of pressure application modes being a step pressure application mode which includes a plurality of increasing pressure steps, followed by a dwell period at said maximum cuff pressure, followed by a plurality of decreasing pressure steps.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

at least one of said pressure application modes of said plurality of pressure application modes having a cycle which is repeated at least twice per minute; and,

said cycle including a maximum cuff pressure of 55 mmHg and a minimum cuff pressure of 0 mmHg.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said increasing pressure steps including a plurality of 10 mmHg steps and one 5 mmHg step.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said increasing pressure steps performed over a step period which is longer than said dwell period.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said pump capable of raising said cuff pressure from 0 mmHg to 55 mmHg within two seconds.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

a display disposed at said cuff; and,

said display displaying a cumulative number of hours of apparatus use.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said cuff having an inside surface which is configured to abut the limb of the patient;

a pressure switch disposed at said inside surface of said cuff, so that when said cuff is wrapped around the limb of the patient said pressure switch closes; and,

if said pressure switch is not closed, said pump will not operate.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said cuff having a body;

said cuff including a fastener for securing said cuff to the limb of the patient;

said fastener including an outwardly projecting tab having a proximal end and a distal end, said tab outwardly projecting from said body of said cuff;

one of hook material or loop material disposed at said distal end; and,

elastic material disposed at said proximal end but not at said distal end, said elastic material separating said body of said cuff from said distal end of said tab.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further including:

said increasing pressure steps including a plurality of 10 mmHg steps and one 5 mmHg step;

said increasing pressure steps performed over a step period which is longer than said dwell period;

a display disposed at said cuff; and,

said display displaying a cumulative number of hours of apparatus use.

10. An apparatus for applying periodic pressure to the limb of a patient, comprising:

a cuff having a bladder, said cuff shaped and dimensioned to wrap around the limb of the patient;

a pump for inflating said bladder to a cuff pressure;

a pressure application mode which controls operation of said pump; said pressure application mode having a minimum cuff pressure and a maximum cuff pressure; and,

said pressure application mode being a step pressure application mode which includes a plurality of increasing pressure steps, followed by a dwell period at said maximum cuff pressure, followed by a plurality of decreasing pressure steps.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further including:

said increasing pressure steps including a plurality of 10 mmHg steps and one 5 mmHg step.

12. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further including:

said increasing pressure steps performed over a step period which is longer than said dwell period.

13. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further including:

a display disposed at said cuff; and,

said display displaying a cumulative number of hours of apparatus use.

14. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further including:

said cuff having an inside surface which is configured to abut the limb of the patient;

a pressure switch disposed at said inside surface of said cuff, so that when said cuff is wrapped around the limb of the patient said pressure switch closes; and,

if said pressure switch is not closed, said pump will not operate.

15. The apparatus according to claim 10 , further including:

said cuff having a body;

said cuff including a fastener for securing said cuff to the limb of the patient;

said fastener including an outwardly projecting tab having a proximal end and a distal end, said tab outwardly projecting from said body of said cuff;

one of hook material or loop material disposed at said distal end; and,

elastic material disposed at said proximal end but not at said distal end, said elastic material separating said body of said cuff from said distal end of said tab.
