Abstract

According to one embodiment of the present disclosure a computer-implemented method for automatically transitioning a user interface in a personal computing device between a laptop mode and a tablet mode is provided. The method includes detecting a hardware configuration change in the personal computing device. When the hardware configuration changes to a tablet mode, the method includes maximizing an active window in a display of the personal computing device and maximizing a second, inactive window, underneath the active window. And when the hardware configuration changes to a laptop mode, the method includes configuring the user interface to a windows icons menus and pointers (WIMP) mode. According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a personal computing device having a base portion coupled to a display portion is provided. The personal computing device is configured to perform a computer-implemented method as described above.

Claims (43)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

detecting a hardware configuration change of a personal computing device from a first configuration to a second configuration;

in response to detecting the hardware configuration change to the second configuration, maximizing a plurality of open windows in a user interface displayed by the personal computing device;

stacking the maximized plurality of open windows for display in the user interface;

detecting a hardware configuration change of the personal computing device from the second configuration to the first configuration; and

in response to detecting the hardware configuration change to the first configuration, spreading the plurality of open windows across the user interface displayed by the personal computing device, wherein at least an interactive portion of each of the plurality of open windows is accessible in the displayed user interface.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the maximized plurality of open windows are stacked in a temporal order with a more recently active window of the plurality of open windows stacked on top of a less recently active window of the plurality of open windows.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising providing an overview layout control for display in the user interface in response to detecting the hardware configuration change to the second configuration.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the overview layout control is provided for display in a permanent affordance bar of the user interface.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the hardware configuration change to the second configuration comprises detecting separation of a keyboard from the personal computing device.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first configuration comprises a laptop configuration, and the second configuration comprises one of a tablet configuration, a stand-display configuration or a tent configuration.

7. A personal computing device, comprising:

a base portion comprising a processor circuit and a memory circuit;

a display portion comprising a touch screen display; and

a hinge mechanism coupling the base portion and the display portion,

wherein the memory circuit stores commands executable by the processor circuit to:

provide a user interface for display on the touch screen display;

determine a hardware configuration of the base portion and the display portion; and

switch the user interface displayed on the touch screen display between a laptop mode and a tablet mode based on the determined hardware configuration,

wherein the laptop mode of the user interface comprises a plurality of open windows spread across the user interface with an interactive portion of each of the plurality of open windows accessible in the displayed user interface, and

wherein the tablet mode comprises the plurality of open windows maximized and stacked for display in the user interface.

8. The personal computing device of claim 7 , further comprising a sensor, wherein the hardware configuration is determined by the processor circuit based on a signal received from the sensor.

9. The personal computing device of claim 7 , wherein the display portion and the base portion form an angle, and wherein the hinge mechanism is operable to position the display portion at an angle with respect to the base portion between 0 degrees and 360 degrees.

10. The personal computing device of claim 9 , wherein the personal computing device is determined to be in a first hardware configuration when the angle is less than 180 degrees and a second hardware configuration when the angle is greater than 180 degrees, and

wherein the user interface is switched to the laptop mode in the first hardware configuration and the tablet mode in the second hardware configuration.

11. The personal computing device of claim 10 , wherein the second configuration comprises one of a tablet configuration, a stand-display configuration or a tent configuration.

12. The personal computing device of claim 7 , wherein the laptop mode of the user interface further comprises a windows icons menus and pointers (WIMP) mode.

13. The personal computing device of claim 7 , wherein the tablet mode further comprises the plurality of maximized open windows stacked in a temporal order for display in the user interface.

14. The personal computing device of claim 7 , wherein the tablet mode further comprises an inactive window of the plurality of maximized open windows stacked underneath an active window of the plurality of maximized open windows for display in the user interface.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing commands that, when executed by a processor circuit in a personal computing device, cause the personal computing device to perform a method comprising:

detecting a hardware configuration change of a personal computing device from a first configuration to a second configuration;

in response to detecting the hardware configuration change to the second configuration, setting a user interface displayed by the personal computing device to a tablet mode;

detecting a hardware configuration change of the personal computing device from the second configuration to the first configuration; and

in response to detecting the hardware configuration change to the first configuration, setting the user interface displayed by the personal computing device to a windows icons menus and pointers (WIMP) mode.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein setting the user interface to the tablet mode comprises:

maximizing an active window in the user interface; and

maximizing an inactive window underneath the maximized active window in the user interface.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein setting the user interface to the tablet mode comprises:

maximizing a plurality of open windows in the user interface; and

stacking the maximized plurality of open windows in a temporal order for display in the user interface.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the WIMP mode comprises a plurality of open windows spread across the user interface with an interactive portion of each of the plurality of open windows accessible in the displayed user interface.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein setting the user interface to the tablet mode comprises providing an overview layout control for display in a permanent affordance bar of the user interface.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein detecting the hardware configuration change to the second configuration comprises detecting separation of a keyboard from the personal computing device.
