Abstract

Devices and methods for cooling microwave antennas are disclosed herein. The cooling systems can be used with various types of microwave antennas. One variation generally comprises a handle portion with an elongate outer jacket extending from the handle portion. A microwave antenna is positioned within the handle and outer jacket such that cooling fluid pumped into the handle comes into contact directly along a portion of the length, or a majority of the length, or the entire length of the antenna to allow for direct convective cooling. Other variations include cooling sheaths which form defined cooling channels around a portion of the antenna. Yet another variation includes passively-cooled systems which utilize expandable balloons to urge tissue away from the surface of the microwave antenna as well as cooling sheaths which are cooled through endothermic chemical reactions. Furthermore, the microwave antennas themselves can have cooling lumens integrated directly therethrough.

Claims (22)

1. A microwave antenna assembly, comprising:

an outer jacket;

a feedline at least partially disposed within the outer jacket, the feedline including a radiating portion disposed thereon, the outer jacket and the feedline dimensioned such that a fluid volume is defined therebetween, the fluid volume having a first fluid volume region and a second fluid volume region isolated from the first fluid volume region;

an inflow tubing disposed within and in fluid communication with at least a portion of the fluid volume; and a third fluid volume region disposed proximal of and isolated from the first fluid volume region and distal of and isolated from the second fluid volume region.

2. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a gasket disposed between the first fluid volume region and the second fluid volume region.

The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a second inflow tubing extending through the second fluid volume region and the third fluid volume region such that a distal portion of the second inflow tubing is disposed within and in fluid communication with the first fluid volume region, and an outflow tubing extending through the second fluid volume region and the third fluid volume region such that a distal portion of the outflow tubing is disposed within and in fluid communication with the first fluid volume region.

4. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising an outflow tubing disposed within and in fluid communication with at least a portion of the fluid volume, wherein a distal end of the inflow tubing extends distally of a distal end of the outflow tubing.

5. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising an outflow tubing disposed within and in fluid communication with at least a portion of the fluid volume, wherein a distal end of the inflow tubing is disposed adjacent a distal end of the outflow tubing.

6. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inflow tubing is in fluid communication with the first fluid volume region of the fluid volume.

7. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the inflow tubing is configured to deliver carbon dioxide to the fluid volume.

8. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a tapered conductive tip operably coupled to the outer jacket.

9. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 8 , wherein the feedline includes an inner conductor electrically coupled to the tapered conductive tip.

10. A microwave antenna assembly, comprising:

an outer jacket;

a feedline at least partially disposed within the outer jacket, the feedline including a radiating portion;

a fluid volume defined between the outer jacket and the feedline, the fluid volume having a first fluid volume region and a second fluid volume region isolated from the first fluid volume region;

an inflow tubing disposed within the fluid volume adjacent the feedline; and a third fluid volume region disposed proximal of and isolated from the first fluid volume region and distal of and isolated from the second fluid volume region.

11. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the inflow tubing is in fluid communication with the first fluid volume region of the fluid volume.

12. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the inflow tubing is configured to deliver carbon dioxide to the fluid volume.

13. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 10 , further comprising a barrier disposed within the fluid volume separating the first fluid volume region from the second fluid volume region.

14. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 10 , further comprising a tapered conductive tip operably coupled to the outer jacket.

15. The microwave antenna assembly according to claim 14 , wherein the feedline includes an inner conductor electrically coupled to the tapered conductive tip.
