Abstract

An endoscope includes a shaft having proximal and distal ends and a longitudinal axis therebetween. A handle is coupled to the proximal end of the shaft, and an image sensor is carried on the distal end of the shaft. A channel extends through at least a distal shaft portion and has a channel diameter, and a section of the channel is re-configurable between a constricted shape and a non-constricted shape to accommodate tools introduced therethrough. The combined diagonal dimension and channel diameter is usually greater than the outer shaft diameter. The image sensor may be connected to a connector on the housing by a first slack flex circuit and a lights source on the shaft may be connected to a connector on the housing by a second slack flex circuit.

Claims (14)

1. An endoscope comprising:

an elongated shaft assembly;

a handle coupled to a proximal portion of the shaft assembly;

an image sensor carried by a distal portion of the shaft assembly;

an elongate sleeve within the shaft assembly, wherein a distal section of the sleeve has an interior channel that is re-configurable between a constricted open channel for allowing fluid outflows and a non-constricted open channel to accommodate a tool introduced through the channel and wherein said distal section of the sleeve has a first radiused superior surface that is rigid and a second radiused inferior surface coupled to a living hinge, and first and second sidewall cut-outs between said superior and inferior surfaces; and

an elastic sleeve surrounding said distal section for collapsing together the superior and inferior surfaces so that edges of the radiused surfaces contact one another to provide said constricted open channel.

2. The endoscope of claim 1 wherein the image sensor has a diagonal dimension that is at least 50% of a diameter of the distal portion of the shaft assembly with the sleeve configured with said constricted open channel.

3. The endoscope of claim 2 wherein said diagonal dimension is at least 60% of the diameter of the distal portion of the shaft assembly with the sleeve configured with said constricted open channel.

4. The endoscope of claim 1 wherein a diameter of the interior channel of the sleeve is at least 50% of a diameter of the proximal portion of the shaft assembly.

5. The endoscope of claim 4 wherein the diameter of the interior channel is at least 60% of the diameter of the proximal portion of the shaft assembly.

6. The endoscope of claim 1 further comprising a remote fluid source for providing fluid inflows through an inflow channel in the shaft assembly to an outlet in the distal portion of the shaft assembly.

7. The endoscope of claim 6 further comprising a remote negative pressure source in communication with said interior channel for providing fluid outflows therethrough.

8. The endoscope of claim 7 further comprising a remote controller for controlling fluid inflows through the inflow channel and fluid outflows through the interior channel, and an actuator in the handle coupled to the controller for adjusting fluid inflows and outflows.

9. The endoscope of claim 8 wherein the controller is configured to operate the fluid source and negative pressure source such that fluid pressure is maintained within a set pressure range in a working space.
