Abstract

An analog-to-digital converter has first and second comparators and an interpolation comparator. The first comparator receives an input signal and a comparison signal, and generates an output as a function of the input signal and the comparison signal. The second comparator receives the input signal and a second comparison signal (different from the first comparison signal), and generates a second output as a function of the input signal and the second comparison signal. The interpolation comparator, operatively connected to the first and second comparators, receives the first and second outputs, and generates a third output based on relative timing of the first and second outputs.

Claims (29)

1. An analog-to-digital converter, comprising:

a first comparator for receiving an input signal and a first comparison signal, and for generating a first output as a function of the input signal and the first comparison signal;

a second comparator for receiving the input signal and a second comparison signal, and for generating a second output as a function of the input signal and the second comparison signal, and wherein the second comparison signal is different from the first comparison signal; and

an interpolation comparator, operatively connected to the first comparator and the second comparator, for receiving the first output and the second output, and for generating a third output based on relative timing of the first output and the second output;

wherein the first and second comparators and the interpolation comparator are configured such that a first one of the first and second outputs rises faster than a second one of the first and second outputs, and the third output is based on receipt of the first one of the first and second outputs before receipt of the second one of the first and second outputs;

further including dummy comparators for preserving timing information associated with the first and second comparators;

further including a second-level comparator for receiving timing signals from the interpolation comparator and one of the dummy comparators, and for generating a second-level signal corresponding to the input signal;

further including a third-level comparator for receiving timing signals from the second-level comparator and a second-level dummy comparator, and for generating a third-level signal corresponding to the input signal.

2. An analog-to-digital converter, comprising:

a first comparator for receiving an input signal and a first comparison signal, and for generating a first output as a function of the input signal and the first comparison signal;

a second comparator for receiving the input signal and a second comparison signal, and for generating a second output as a function of the input signal and the second comparison signal, and wherein the second comparison signal is different from the first comparison signal; and

an interpolation comparator, operatively connected to the first comparator and the second comparator, for receiving the first output and the second output, and for generating a third output based on relative timing of the first output and the second output;

wherein the first and second comparators and the interpolation comparator are configured such that a first one of the first and second outputs rises faster than a second one of the first and second outputs, and the third output is based on receipt of the first one of the first and second outputs before receipt of the second one of the first and second outputs;

further including dummy comparators for preserving timing information associated with the first and second comparators;

further including a multiplexing system for permitting a second-level comparator to receive timing signals from the interpolation comparator and one of the dummy comparators.

3. A six-stage analog-to-digital converter, comprising:

a first stage, including: (A) a first comparator for receiving an input voltage and a first reference voltage, and for generating a first output as a function of the input and first reference voltages; (B) a second comparator for receiving the input voltage and a second reference voltage, and for generating a second output as a function of the input and second reference voltages, and wherein the second reference voltage is different from the first reference voltage; and (C) a third comparator for receiving the first and second outputs, and for generating a third output based on relative timing of the first and second outputs and representative of the input voltage; and

second through sixth stages including successive comparators for receiving interpolation signals from the first through fifth stages, respectively, and for generating outputs representative of the input voltage.

4. The converter of claim 3 , wherein the first, second, and third comparators are configured such that a first one of the first and second outputs rises faster than a second one of the first and second outputs, and the third output is based on the first one of the first and second outputs.

5. The converter of claim 4 , wherein the first stage includes dummy comparators for preserving timing information associated with the first and second comparators.

6. The converter of claim 5 , further including a multiplexing system for permitting the second stage to receive timing signals from the third comparator and one of the dummy comparators.

7. The converter of claim 6 , wherein the multiplexing system includes parallel switches for selectively allowing signals to be transmitted from the first stage to the second stage.

8. The converter of claim 7 , wherein the multiplexing system includes a digital logic element for operating the switches.

9. The converter of claim 8 , wherein the multiplexing system includes delay elements for preserving timing information in the signals to be transmitted to the second stage.

10. The converter of claim 9 , further including a timing system for generating clock signals for controlling the first through sixth stages.

11. The converter of claim 10 , wherein the timing system includes comparators for determining the relative timing of the clock signals.

12. The converter of claim 4 , wherein the second stage includes an interpolation comparator for receiving timing signals from the third comparator and one of the dummy comparators.

13. The converter of claim 12 , wherein the third stage includes an interpolation comparator for receiving timing signals from the interpolation comparator of the second stage and another dummy comparator.

14. A nine-stage analog-to-digital converter, comprising: (A) a three-stage, flash-type, analog-to-digital converter; and (B) the six-stage analog-to-digital converter of claim 3 ; and wherein the first and second comparators of the six-stage analog-to-digital converter are elements of the three-stage, flash-type, analog-to-digital converter.
