Surgical end effectors with staple cartridges
An end effector for use with a surgical instrument includes an anvil with at least one staple pocket that defines a longitudinal axis. The staple pocket comprises a first cup and a second cup. The end effector also includes a staple cartridge.
1. An end effector for use with a surgical instrument including a closure driver, the end effector comprising:
a first jaw comprising an anvil including at least one staple pocket that defines a longitudinal axis, wherein the staple pocket comprises:
a first cup; and
a second cup; and
a second jaw comprising a staple cartridge, wherein the end effector is transitionable between an open configuration and a closed configuration in response to a closure motion by the closure driver, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw cooperate to grasp tissue in the closed configuration, and wherein the staple cartridge comprises:
staples deployable from the staple cartridge into the tissue, wherein each of the staples comprises:
a crown;
a first deformable member extending from the crown; and
a second deformable member extending from the crown, wherein the first deformable member and the second deformable member define a common plane prior to being deformed by the anvil, wherein the first cup comprises a first surface shaped to bend the first deformable member toward a first side of the common plane, and wherein the second cup comprises a second surface shaped to bend the second deformable member toward a second side of the common plane opposite the first side; and
a sled movable to deploy the staples into the tissue, wherein the sled comprises a camming surface movable into a direct engagement with the crown to motivate the first deformable member to contact the first surface of the first cup and the second deformable member to contact the second surface of the second cup.

The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first deformable member comprises a first end, wherein the second deformable member comprises a second end, and wherein the first end is deformed in a first direction, and wherein the second end is deformed in a second direction transverse to the first direction.
3. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein an angle is defined between the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the angle is approximately 90 degrees.
4. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein an angle is defined between the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the angle is between approximately 0.1 degrees and approximately 90 degrees.
5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first cup comprises a first inner surface at least partially positioned on a first side of the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second cup comprises a second inner surface at least partially positioned on a second side of the longitudinal axis.
6. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein the first inner surface defines a first plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second inner surface defines a second plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.
7. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein the first cup and the second cup are separated by a sidewall, wherein a first side of the sidewall comprises the first inner surface, and wherein a second side of the sidewall comprises the second inner surface.
8. An end effector for use with a surgical instrument including a closure driver, the end effector comprising:
a first jaw comprising an anvil including at least one staple pocket that defines a longitudinal axis, wherein the staple pocket comprises:
a first cup; and
a second cup; and
a second law comprising a staple cartridge, wherein the end effector is transitionable between an open configuration and a closed configuration in response to a closure motion by the closure driver, wherein the first law and the second law cooperate to grasp tissue in the closed configuration, and wherein the staple cartridge comprises:
staples deployable from the staple cartridge into the tissue, wherein each of the staples comprises:
a crown comprising a sled-engagement surface;
a first leg extending from the crown; and
a second leg extending from the crown, wherein the first leg and the second leg define a common plane prior to being deformed by the anvil, wherein the first cup comprises a first surface shaped to bend the first leg toward a first side of the common plane, and wherein the second cup comprises a second surface shaped to bend the second leg toward a second side of the common plane opposite the first side; and
a sled comprising a crown-engagement surface, wherein the crown-engagement surface is movable to motivate the sled-engagement surface of the crown to cause the first leg to contact the first surface of the first cup and the second leg to contact the second surface of the second cup.
9. The end effector of claim 8 , wherein the first leg comprises a first end, wherein the second leg comprises a second end, and wherein the first end is deformed in a first direction, and wherein the second end is deformed in a second direction transverse to the first direction.
10. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein an angle is defined between the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the angle is approximately 90 degrees.
11. The end effector of claim 9 , wherein an angle is defined between the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the angle is between approximately 0.1 degrees and approximately 90 degrees.
12. The end effector of claim 8 , wherein the first cup comprises a first inner surface at least partially positioned on a first side of the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second cup comprises a second inner surface at least partially positioned on a second side of the longitudinal axis.
13. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein the first inner surface defines a first plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second inner surface defines a second plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.
14. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein the first cup and the second cup are separated by a sidewall, wherein a first side of the sidewall comprises the first inner surface, and wherein a second side of the sidewall comprises the second inner surface.
15. An end effector for use with a surgical instrument including a closure driver, the end effector comprising:
a first jaw comprising an anvil including at least one staple pocket that defines a longitudinal axis, wherein the staple pocket comprises:
a first cup; and
a second cup; and
a second jaw comprising a staple cartridge, wherein the end effector is transitionable between an open configuration and a closed configuration in response to a closure motion by the closure driver, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw cooperate to grasp tissue in the closed configuration, and wherein the staple cartridge comprises:
staples deployable from the staple cartridge into the tissue, wherein each of the staples comprises:
a central portion;
a first leg extending from the central portion; and
a second leg extending from the central portion, wherein the first cup comprises a first surface shaped to bend the first leg toward a first side of the central portion, and wherein the second cup comprises a second surface shaped to bend the second leg toward a second side of the central portion opposite the first side; and
a sled movable to deploy the staples into the tissue, wherein the sled comprises a camming surface movable into a direct engagement with the central portion to motivate the first leg to contact the first surface of the first cup and the second leg to contact the second surface of the second cup.
16. The end effector of claim 15 , wherein the first leg comprises a first end, wherein the second leg comprises a second end, and wherein the first end is deformed in a first direction, and wherein the second end is deformed in a second direction transverse to the first direction.
17. The end effector of claim 16 , wherein an angle is defined between the first direction and the second direction, and wherein the angle is between approximately 0.1 degrees and approximately 90 degrees.
18. The end effector of claim 15 , wherein the first cup comprises a first inner surface at least partially positioned on a first side of the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second cup comprises a second inner surface at least partially positioned on a second side of the longitudinal axis.
19. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein the first inner surface defines a first plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, and wherein the second inner surface defines a second plane oriented at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.
20. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein the first cup and the second cup are separated by a sidewall, wherein a first side of the sidewall comprises the first inner surface, and wherein a second side of the sidewall comprises the second inner surface.
