Abstract

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture to monitor media presentations are disclosed. An example method includes collecting demographic information from a user, transmitting the demographic information to a central facility, generating a panelist identifier identifying the user, and hosting a web server to serve the panelist identifier to media that is instrumented with monitoring instructions executing on the media device, the monitoring instructions, when executed, to collect monitoring information and transmit the monitoring information along with the panelist identifier to the central facility.

storing the panelist identifier on the media presentation device in association with a web server hosted at the media presentation device, the web server executing on the media presentation device for local communication on the media presentation device;

serving, via the web server using a web protocol, the stored panelist identifier to media that is instrumented with monitoring code, the media presented at a web browser on the media presentation device, the instrumented media accessed via an encrypted communication; and

executing, in the web browser at the media presentation device, the monitoring code to collect monitoring information associated with content accessed by the user in the web browser and transmit the monitoring information along with the panelist identifier to the central facility.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the web server serves the panelist identifier on a local network of the media presentation device.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the web server receives a web protocol request.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including authenticating the monitoring code prior to sending the panelist identifier.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the panelist identifier is a hash value.

7. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including requesting user input of demographic information.

8. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the instrumented media is presented by the web browser.

9. The method as defined in claim 8 , wherein the web browser is executing without a browser extension associated with the central facility.

10. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the instrumented media is encrypted prior to reception at the media presentation device.

11. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein a panelist meter does not decrypt the encrypted instrumented media.

12. The method as defined in claim 10 , wherein the web browser executing on the media presentation device decrypts the instrumented media and executes the monitoring code.

13. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the web server is associated with a panelist meter and the monitoring code, when executed, transmits the monitoring information along with the panelist identifier to the central facility by transmitting the monitoring information to the web server.

14. The method as defined in claim 13 , wherein the panelist meter transmits the monitoring information received at the web server to the central facility.

15. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including determining if a browser extension is operating in the web browser accessing the instrumented media at the media presentation device.

16. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the encrypted communication is transmitted using a hypertext transport protocol secure protocol.

17. An apparatus comprising:

a user information solicitor to collect demographic information from a user;

a registration data transmitter to transmit, via an external network, the demographic information to a central facility and to receive, via the external network, a panelist identifier identifying the user; and

a web server, hosted at a media presentation device, executing on the media presentation device for local communication on the media presentation device, to:

store the panelist identifier at the media presentation device;

serve, via a web protocol, the stored panelist identifier to media that is instrumented with monitoring code, the media presented at a web browser on the media presentation device, wherein the instrumented media is accessed via an encrypted communication, wherein the monitoring code, when executed in the web browser at the media presentation device, is to collect monitoring information associated with content accessed by the user in the web browser and transmit the monitoring information along with the panelist identifier to the central facility.

18. An apparatus as defined in claim 17 , wherein the web server is to serve the panelist identifier on a local network of the media presentation device.

19. The apparatus as defined in claim 17 , wherein the web server is to receive a web protocol request.

20. The apparatus as defined in claim 17 , wherein the web server is to authenticate the monitoring code prior to sending the panelist identifier.

21. The apparatus as defined in claim 17 , wherein the panelist identifier is a hash value.

22. The apparatus as described in claim 17 , wherein the registration data transmitter is to receive the panelist identifier from the central facility.

23. The apparatus as defined in claim 17 , wherein the user information solicitor is to request user input of demographic information.

24. A tangible computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to at least:

collect, via a panelist meter, demographic information from a user;

transmit, via an external network, the demographic information to a central facility to request a panelist identifier for the user;

receive, via the external network, a panelist identifier identifying the user from the central facility;

store the panelist identifier on a media presentation device in association with a web server hosted at the media presentation device, the web server executing on the media presentation device for local communication on the media presentation device;

serve, via the web server using a web protocol, the stored panelist identifier to media that is instrumented with monitoring code, the media presented at a web browser on the media presentation device, the instrumented media accessed via an encrypted communication; and

execute, in the web browser at the media presentation device, the monitoring code to collect monitoring information associated with content accessed by the user in the web browser and transmit the monitoring information along with the panelist identifier to the central facility.

25. The tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 24 , wherein the web server is to serve the panelist identifier on a local network of the media presentation device.

26. The tangible computer readable storage medium as defined in claim 24 , wherein the web server is to receive a web protocol request.
