Abstract

A point cloud capture system is provided to detect and correct data density during point cloud generation. The system obtains data points that are distributed within a space and that collectively represent one or more surfaces of an object, scene, or environment. The system computes the different densities with which the data points are distributed in different regions of the space, and presents an interface with a first representation for a first region of the space in which a first subset of the data points are distributed with a first density, and a second representation for a second region of the space in which a second subset of the data points are distributed with a second density.

determining that a density associated with the first set of data does not satisfy a density threshold;

identifying a second position that exposes the first region of the scene to the imaging device from a different second perspective;

generating a second set of data in response to scanning the scene with the imaging device at the second position;

determining that a combination of the first set of data and the second set of data satisfies the density threshold; and

generating an image of the first region from coalescing the first set of data and the second set of data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the density does not satisfy the density threshold comprises:

determining that the first perspective obscures a particular part of the first region from the imaging device; and

determining that the second perspective exposes the particular part of the first region to the imaging device.

3. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein generating the first set of data comprises capturing the scene with the imaging device configured with a first set of settings; and

wherein generating the second set of data comprises capturing the scene with the imaging device configured with a different second set of settings.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

controlling one or more actuators in repositioning the imaging device to the second position.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein controlling the one or more actuators in repositioning the imaging device to the second position comprises one or more of moving the imaging device closer to the scene, rotating the imaging device, or elevating the imaging device.

6. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

controlling the one or more actuators in repositioning the imaging device to a third position that exposes a second region of the scene to the imaging device in response to determining that the combination of the first set of data and the second set of data satisfies the density threshold.

7. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the first set of data comprises data points detected at a first set of positions;

wherein the second set of data comprises data points detected at a second set of positions; and

wherein generating the image comprises constructing the first region of the scene from the data points detected at the first set of positions and the data points detected at the second set of positions.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a third set of data in response to scanning a second region of the scene with the imaging device at the first position;

determining that the third set of data satisfies the density threshold; and

generating an image of the second region from the third set of data.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a third set of data in response to scanning a second region of the scene with the imaging device at the first position;

determining that the second region is at a different depth or distance from the imaging device than the first region; and

analyzing a density of the third set of data with a different density threshold than the density of the first set of data based on the different depth or distance of the second region from the imaging device than the first region.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a third set of data in response to scanning a second region of the scene with the imaging device at the first position;

determining that the second region is at a periphery of the scene and that the first region is at a center of the scene; and

analyzing a density of the third set of data with a different density threshold than the density of the first set of data based on the second region being at the periphery of the scene and the first region being at the center of the scene.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

computing the density associated with the first set of data based on distances between different data points in the first set of data.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

computing the density associated with the first set of data based on spatial separation between different data points of the first set of data in a three-dimensional space.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

computing the density associated with the first set of data based on a number of data points in the first set of data and a size of the first region represented by the first set of data.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating a first representation of the first region based on the first set of data not satisfying the density threshold; and

generating a second representation of the first region based on the combination of the first set of data and the second set of data satisfying the density threshold.

15. The method of claim 14 ,

wherein generating the first representation comprises presenting the first region with a first color; and

wherein generating the second representation comprises presenting the first region with a second color.

16. A system comprising:

an imaging device; and

one or more processors configured to:

generate a first set of data in response to scanning a scene with the imaging device at a first position, wherein the first position exposes a first region of the scene to the imaging device from a first perspective;

determine that a density associated with the first set of data does not satisfy a density threshold;
