Abstract

Techniques for serving a manifest file of an adaptive streaming video include receiving a request for the manifest file from a user device. The video is encoded at different reference bitrates and each encoded reference bitrate is divided into segments to generate video segment files. The manifest file includes an ordered list of universal resource locators (URLs) that reference a set of video segment files encoded at a particular reference bitrate. A source manifest file that indicates the set of video segment files is identified based on the request. An issued manifest file that includes a first URL and a second URL is generated based on the source manifest file. The first URL references a first domain and the second URL references a second domain that is different from the first domain. The issued manifest file is transmitted to the user device as a response to the request.

Claims (40)

1. A method for configuring and providing manifest files for adaptive streaming video, comprising:

receiving, by a first infrastructure service provider, one or more first content requests, each said first request identifying one or more requested content files corresponding to an aspect of an adaptive streaming video;

transmitting, by the first infrastructure service provider, the requested content files to one or more recipient devices, wherein at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video is not transmitted by the first infrastructure service provider, but is provided by one or more infrastructure services each of which is operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider;

collecting, by the first infrastructure service provider, performance data from the one or more separate infrastructure services providing at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video and corresponding to the transmission of the requested content files from the one or more separate infrastructure services to the one or more recipient devices;

receiving, by the first infrastructure service provider, a second request for a manifest file for the adaptive streaming video, wherein said second request is received after the collection of the performance data;

selecting, by the first infrastructure service provider, a second infrastructure service provider operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider, to provide at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video, based on the collected performance data;

configuring, by the first infrastructure service provider, a manifest file including one or more Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) referencing content files corresponding to an aspect of the adaptive streaming video, the URLs referencing the selected second infrastructure service provider; and

transmitting, by the first infrastructure service provider, the configured manifest file in response to the request for the manifest file.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the content files comprises a video segment file.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider comprises one of the one or more infrastructure services, and wherein at least some of the performance data relates to the second infrastructure service provider.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the performance data; and at least one characteristic of the received request for the manifest file.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the performance data; and at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video comprises at least one of: a request rate of the adaptive streaming video; and a content characteristic of the adaptive streaming video.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the collected performance data, performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein determining the performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider comprises:

determining at least one of a bandwidth shift, a buffering event, or a server failure during the transmission of the adaptive streaming video to one or more recipient devices; and

attributing the at least one bandwidth shift, buffering event, or server failure to one or more of the infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the collected performance data, performance associated with an intermediate network.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, with the first infrastructure service provider, based on the collected performance data, performance associated with a network coupled to a user's device receiving the manifest file.

11. A system for configuring and providing manifest files for adaptive streaming video, the system comprising:

a first infrastructure service provider comprising at least one computer servers, said at least one computer server in the first infrastructure service provider comprising:

a processing unit including one or more processors; and

memory coupled with and readable by the processing unit and storing therein a set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, causes the at least one computer server to:

receive one or more first content requests, each said first request identifying one or more requested content files corresponding to an aspect of an adaptive streaming video;

collect performance data from one or more separate infrastructure services providing at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video, the data corresponding to transmission of the one or more requested content files from the one or more separate infrastructure services to one or more recipient devices, wherein each of the one or more separate infrastructure services is operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider;

receive a second request for a manifest file for the adaptive streaming video, wherein said second request is received after the collection of the performance data;

selecting a second infrastructure service provider operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider, to provide at least a portion of the adaptive streaming video, based on the collected performance data;

configuring a manifest file including one or more Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) referencing content files corresponding to an aspect of the adaptive streaming video, the URLs referencing the selected second infrastructure service provider; and

transmitting the configured manifest file in response to the request for the manifest file.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein each of the content files comprises a video segment file.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider comprises one of the one or more infrastructure services, and wherein at least some of the performance data relates to the second infrastructure service provider.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the performance data; and at least one characteristic of the received request for the manifest file.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second infrastructure service provider is selected based on at least both: the performance data; and at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one characteristic of the adaptive streaming video comprises at least one of: a request rate of the adaptive streaming video; and a content characteristic of the adaptive streaming video.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the collected performance data, performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein determining the performance metrics associated with the one or more infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider comprises:

determining at least one of a bandwidth shift, a buffering event, or a server failure during the transmission of the adaptive streaming video to one or more recipient devices; and

attributing the at least one bandwidth shift, buffering event, or server failure to one or more of the infrastructure services operated as a separate service from the first infrastructure service provider.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the collected performance data, performance associated with an intermediate network.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions which, when executed by the processing unit, further cause the at least one computer server to determine, based on the collected performance data, performance associated with a network coupled to a user's device receiving the manifest file.
