Abstract

A subcutaneous device that includes an electronics-containing housing and a clip configured to anchor the device to an internal structural body component of a patient is injected and anchored to the structural body component. An instrument pre-loaded with the device is caused to be inserted through an incision in the patient and advanced to the structural body component. A pushing force is received on the instrument that causes the clip of the device to be pushed onto the structural body component so that the structural body component is located in a sandwiching region between a top portion of the clip and the housing of the device. Force is applied to the structural body component between the top portion of the clip and the housing of the device to anchor the device to the structural body component.

Claims (36)

1. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to an internal structural body component of a patient, wherein the device includes an electronics-containing housing and a clip configured to anchor the device to the internal structural body component, the clip having a top portion spaced from the electronics-containing housing with an intermediate portion to define a sandwiching region between the top portion of the clip and the electronics-containing housing of the device, the method comprising:

causing an instrument pre-loaded with the device to be inserted through an incision in the patient and advanced to the internal structural body component to which the device is to be anchored; and

receiving a pushing force on the instrument that causes the clip of the device to be pushed onto the internal structural body component so that the structural body component is located in the sandwiching region between the top portion of the clip and the electronics-containing housing of the device, in physical contact with the top portion of the clip and the electronics-containing housing of the device;

wherein force is applied to the internal structural body component between the top portion of the clip and the electronics-containing housing of the device to anchor the device to the internal structural body component.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate portion of the clip of the device comprises a spring portion connected to the top portion, the spring portion being configured with a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to apply the force to the internal structural body component to anchor the device to the internal structural body component.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the pushing force on the instrument further causes a prong of the device to be pushed through tissue of the patient adjacent to the internal structural body component.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the prong is axially stiff and transversally resilient, and receiving the pushing force causes the prong to be pushed into contact with an organ as the clip of the device is pushed onto the internal structural body component.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the prong is axially stiff and transversally resilient, and receiving the pushing force causes the prong to be pushed into contact with a target tissue as the clip of the device is pushed onto the internal structural body component.

6. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

securing the device to the internal structural body component using sutures, tines, pins, and/or screws that are configured to secure the top portion of the clip to the internal structural body component.

7. The method of claim 1 , and further comprising:

removing the instrument from the incision in the patient.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the internal structural body component is a bone.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the bone is a sternum or a xiphoid process.

10. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a sternum in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the sternum, the method comprising:

causing an instrument pre-loaded with the device to be inserted through an incision below the sternum in the patient and advanced to the sternum; and

receiving a pushing force on the instrument that causes the clip of the device to be pushed onto the sternum with a top portion of the clip of the device on a first side of the sternum, a housing of the device on a second opposite side of the sternum, and an intermediate portion of the clip between the top portion of the clip and the housing of the device, so that the sternum is located between the top portion of the clip and the housing;

wherein force is applied to the sternum between the top portion of the clip and the housing of the device to anchor the device to the sternum.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the intermediate portion of the clip of the device comprises a spring portion connected to the top portion, the spring portion being configured with a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to apply the force to the sternum to anchor the device to the sternum.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein receiving the pushing force on the instrument further causes a prong of the device to be pushed through tissue of the patient below the sternum.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the prong is axially stiff and transversally resilient, and receiving the pushing force causes the prong to be pushed into contact with a heart of the patient as the clip of the device is pushed onto the sternum.

14. The method of claim 10 , and further comprising:

securing the device to the sternum using sutures, tines, pins, and/or screws that that are configured to secure the top portion of the clip to the sternum.

15. The method of claim 10 , and further comprising:

removing the instrument from the incision in the patient.

16. A method of subcutaneously injecting and anchoring a device to a xiphoid process in a patient, the device having a clip configured to anchor the device to the xiphoid process, the method comprising:

causing an instrument pre-loaded with the device to be inserted through an incision below the xiphoid process in the patient and advanced to the xiphoid process; and

receiving a pushing force on the instrument that causes the clip of the device to be pushed onto the xiphoid process with a top portion of the clip of the device on a first side of the xiphoid process, a housing of the device on a second opposite side of the xiphoid process, and an intermediate portion of the clip between the top portion of the clip and the housing of the device, so that the xiphoid process is located between the top portion of the clip and the housing;

wherein force is applied to the xiphoid process between the top portion of the clip and the housing of the device to anchor the device to the xiphoid process.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the intermediate portion of the clip of the device comprises a spring portion connected to the top portion, the spring portion being configured with a spring bias that puts tension on the top portion of the clip to apply the force to the xiphoid process to anchor the device to the xiphoid process.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein receiving the pushing force on the instrument further causes a prong of the device to be pushed through tissue of the patient below the xiphoid process.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the prong is axially stiff and transversally resilient, and receiving the pushing force causes the prong to be pushed into contact with a heart of the patient as the clip of the device is pushed onto the xiphoid process.

20. The method of claim 16 , and further comprising:

securing the device to the xiphoid process using sutures, tines, pins, and/or screws that that are configured to secure the top portion of the clip to the xiphoid process.

21. The method of claim 16 , and further comprising:

removing the instrument from the incision in the patient.
