Abstract

A system and associated method for manipulating tissues and anatomical or other structures in medical applications for the purpose of treating diseases or disorders or other purposes. In one aspect, the system includes a delivery device including a flexible portion that is suited to access target anatomy. The flexibility of an elongate portion of the delivery device can be varied. Additionally, the delivery device can include structure that maintains the positioning of the delivery device in patient anatomy.

Claims (23)

1. A method for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia, comprising:

inserting an elongate device longitudinally through a urethra of a subject until at least a distal portion of the elongate device reaches a prostatic urethra; and

deploying an expandable implant through a distal opening of the elongate device and between lateral lobes of a prostate gland, wherein deploying the expandable implant causes it to expand between the lateral lobes, and engage at least one anatomical feature at or near a distal end of the urethra without piercing the urethra or prostate gland, and compress at least a portion of the prostate gland,

wherein at least a portion of the expandable implant comprises a shape-memory material defining one or more pre-formed curvatures, overlapping portions, or spirals.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shape-memory material comprises Nitinol.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongate device comprises an introducer sheath defining an inner lumen configured to receive a compressed configuration of the expandable implant.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the elongate device is flexible and configured to deflect laterally within the urethra.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongate device further comprises an imaging modality.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the imaging modality comprises an endoscope.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing the expandable implant from the subject by retracting the expandable implant proximally through the urethra.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant is resorbable or degradable.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant comprises at least one pre-formed wire.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a proximal portion of the expandable implant is coupled with a push rod.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant remains temporarily implanted in the prostatic urethra by engaging an inner wall of the urethra.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant remains temporarily implanted in the prostatic urethra by the engagement of the at least one anatomical feature at or near a distal end of the urethra.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least one anatomical feature comprises a bladder neck.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising rotating the expandable implant within the prostatic urethra after deploying the expandable implant between the lateral lobes of the prostate gland.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant is configured to be reversibly compressed.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable implant is configured to reduce in length as it expands and lengthen as it is compressed.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein deploying the expandable implant comprises withdrawing the elongate device from the prostatic urethra.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the expandable implant is coated or embedded with one or more therapeutic substances or drugs.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the one or more therapeutic substances or drugs comprise one or more phytochemicals, adrenergic receptor blocking agents, smooth muscle relaxants, bacteriostatic agents, analgesics, antibiotics, cancer treatment substances, or agents configured to inhibit a conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the expandable implant is coated or embedded with one or more diagnostic substances.
