Abstract

A tantalum or tantalum alloy which contains pure or substantially pure tantalum and at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt, Mo, W and Re to form a tantalum alloy that is resistant to aqueous corrosion. The invention also relates to the process of preparing the tantalum alloy.

Claims (14)

1. A tantalum alloy resistant to aqueous corrosion and consisting essentially of Ta-3W-Re, wherein Re is present in an amount of at least 500 ppm and at most 5,000 ppm, and at least one additional element of yttrium, gold, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium or thorium.

2. The tantalum alloy of claim 1 , wherein Ta is present in an amount of at least 89%.

3. The tantalum alloy of claim 1 , wherein the tantalum alloy is prepared by microalloying.

4. The tantalum alloy of claim 3 , wherein the microalloying is performed via laser manufacturing.

5. The tantalum alloy of claim 3 , wherein the microalloying is performed via vacuum arc remelting.

6. The tantalum alloy of claim 3 , wherein the microalloying is performed via electron beam melting.

7. The tantalum alloy of claim 3 , wherein the microalloying is performed via plasma arc melting.

8. A tantalum alloy resistant to aqueous corrosion and consisting essentially of Ta-3W-Re, wherein Re is present in an amount of at least 50 ppm and at most 2,000 ppm.

9. The tantalum alloy of claim 8 , wherein Ta is present in an amount of at least 89%.

10. The tantalum alloy of claim 8 , wherein the tantalum alloy is prepared by microalloying.

11. The tantalum alloy of claim 10 , wherein the microalloying is performed via laser manufacturing.

12. The tantalum alloy of claim 10 , wherein the microalloying is performed via vacuum arc remelting.

13. The tantalum alloy of claim 10 , wherein the microalloying is performed via electron beam melting.

14. The tantalum alloy of claim 10 , wherein the microalloying is performed via plasma arc melting.
