Abstract

A compression staple system for bone fixation may include a compression staple configured to span first and second bone portions. The staple may apply compression between the first and second bone portions. An inserter may be configured to releasably engage the staple. The inserter may include a stationary jaw including a first retention mechanism and a moveable jaw including a second retention mechanism. The moveable jaw may be moveable between a closed configuration wherein the stationary jaw may be spaced apart from the moveable jaw a first distance, and an open configuration wherein the stationary jaw may be spaced apart from the moveable jaw a second distance greater than the first. The staple may be captive within the inserter in the closed configuration. The staple may be releasable from the inserter in the open configuration, and the stationary and moveable jaws may remain parallel between the close and open configurations.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the stationary jaw further comprises an alignment aperture, the moveable jaw further comprises an alignment post, the alignment aperture is configured to slidably receive the alignment post, and the alignment post and the alignment aperture facilitate linear translation of the moveable jaw relative to the stationary jaw.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the compression staple comprises a pair of first legs, a pair of second legs, and a bridge extending between the pair of first legs and the pair of second legs;

the bridge comprises a bone facing side from which the pair of first legs and the pair of second legs extend;

the first retention mechanism comprises a pair of first hooks;

the second retention mechanism comprises a pair of second hooks; and

the pair of first hooks and the pair of second hooks engage the bone facing side between the pair of first legs and the pair of second legs.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein:

the compression staple further comprises a distracted state in which the pair of first legs are generally parallel to the pair of second legs, and a collapsed state in which the pair of first legs are angled inwards towards the pair of second legs and the pair of second legs are angled inwards towards the pair of first legs; and

the inserter further comprises a drive shaft configured to apply a force to the bridge to transition the compression staple between the distracted state and the collapsed state, and a knob configured to convert rotation of the knob into linear movement of the drive shaft.

8. A compression staple system for bone fixation, the system comprising:

a compression staple configured to span a first bone portion and a second bone portion, wherein the compression staple applies compression between the first bone portion and the second bone portion; and

an inserter configured to releasably engage the compression staple, the inserter comprising:

a stationary jaw comprising a first retention mechanism configured to engage the compression staple; and

a moveable jaw comprising a second retention mechanism configured to engage the compression staple;

wherein:

the moveable jaw is moveable, relative to the stationary jaw, between:

a closed configuration wherein the stationary jaw is spaced apart from the moveable jaw a first distance; and

an open configuration wherein the stationary jaw is spaced apart from the moveable jaw a second distance greater than the first distance; and

an actuation mechanism configured to actuate the moveable jaw between the closed configuration and the open configuration;

wherein the inserter is configured for single-handed insertion of the compression staple into the first bone portion and the second bone portion, and single-handed actuation of the actuation mechanism.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stationary jaw and the moveable jaw remain parallel during actuation of the moveable jaw between the closed configuration and the open configuration.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the inserter further comprises a spring configured to bias the actuation mechanism toward the closed configuration.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the stationary jaw further comprises an alignment aperture, the moveable jaw further comprises an alignment post, the alignment aperture is configured to slidably receive the alignment post, and the alignment post and the alignment aperture facilitate linear translation of the moveable jaw relative to the stationary jaw.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the inserter further comprises a guide channel configured to receive a drill pin, wherein the drill pin guides the inserter to the first bone portion.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the compression staple comprises a pair of first legs, a pair of second legs, and a bridge extending between the pair of first legs and the pair of second legs;

the bridge comprises a bone facing side from which the pair of first legs and the pair of second legs extend;

the first retention mechanism comprises a pair of first hooks;
