Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods are disclosed that help deliver catheters or other medical devices to locations within a patient's body. The system includes a transporter catheter having a proximal end and a distal end, at least a first balloon located at the distal end, substantially at a tip of the transporter catheter, and at least a second balloon located between the distal end and the proximal end of the transporter catheter. The first balloon is an orienting balloon and the second balloon is an anchor balloon. The transporter catheter may include a shaft with a single lumen or more than one lumen. The shaft may have a plurality of segments of varying degrees of hardness.

Claims (41)

1 . A method for positioning a stent or other hardware at a site of interest inside a patient's vasculature, the method comprising:

(i) assembling a system comprising a mother catheter, an inner support catheter, and a transporter catheter, the transporter catheter comprising a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the inner support catheter comprising a lumen having a proximal end and a distal end, the transporter catheter extending within the lumen of the inner support catheter;

(ii) inflating at least one anchor balloon formed on the transporter catheter to anchor the transporter catheter to the inner support catheter;

(iii) inflating at least one orienting balloon formed proximate the distal end of the transporter catheter, the at least one orienting balloon upon inflation protruding at least partially outside the distal end of the inner support catheter and engaging a wall of a lumen in the patient's vasculature while advancing the inner support catheter in the patient's vasculature beyond a stenosis in the patient's vasculature;

(iv) withdrawing the transporter catheter after deflating the at least one orienting balloon and the at least one anchor balloon;

(v) placing the stent or other hardware through the inner support catheter distal to the stenosis;

(vi) withdrawing the inner support catheter; and

(vii) positioning the stent or other hardware at the site of interest.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein positioning the stent comprises pulling the stent to the site of interest.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing at least one hole in the body of the inner support catheter to provide for perfusion of blood from outside the inner support catheter into the inner support catheter.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the transporter catheter comprises at least one internal channel for a guidewire, the guidewire extending along the at least one internal channel of the transporter catheter with a proximal end of the guidewire extending beyond the proximal end of the of the transporter catheter and a distal end of the guidewire extending beyond the distal end of the transporter catheter, the method further comprising the step of advancing the distal end of the guidewire beyond the stenosis in the patient's vasculature.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the transporter catheter has a differential flexibility along a length thereof, wherein the differential flexibility increases towards the distal end of the transporter catheter.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising at least one radio-opaque marker on at least a distal portion of the transporter catheter.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anchor balloon is located proximal to the at least one orienting balloon.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the at least one orienting balloon is contoured to assist with the advancing of the inner support catheter through the patient's vasculature.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of a surface of the at least one orienting balloon is coated with a friction-reduction coating.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anchor balloon has a friction-based mechanism between an outer surface of the at least one anchor balloon and an inner surface of the lumen of the inner support catheter.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a degree of hardness of a varying degrees of hardness of a segment of the shaft located between the at least one orienting balloon and the at least one anchor balloon is less than a degree of hardness of the varying degrees of hardness of a segment of the shaft located between the at least one anchor balloon and the proximal end of the shaft.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shaft is tapered and the proximal end of the shaft has a diameter greater than a diameter of the distal end of the shaft.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one imaging marker is placed at a location selected from a group consisting of the at least one orienting balloon, the at least one anchor balloon, and a distal portion of the shaft.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anchor balloon is configured to reduce slippage or pushback of the transporter catheter backwards into the at least one lumen of the inner support catheter when the at least one orienting balloon experiences increased resistance within the patient's vasculature.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anchoring balloon is located proximate to the at least one orienting balloon, whereby the at least one anchoring balloon is configured to act as a stopper to reduce slippage of the at least one orienting balloon from backing into the at least one lumen of the inner support catheter while the catheter system is maneuvered through the patient's vasculature.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the at least one orienting balloon is greater than an outer diameter of the inner support catheter, thereby reducing or eliminating a potential razor effect of an edge of the inner support catheter.

17 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising reducing kinking of the inner support catheter by pulling the inner support catheter using the transporter catheter.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one anchoring balloon is made of materials and/or coated with materials that provide frictional resistance.

19 . A method for positioning a stent or other hardware at a site of interest inside a patient's vasculature, the method comprising:

(i) assembling a system comprising a mother catheter, an inner support catheter, and a transporter catheter, the transporter catheter comprising a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the inner support catheter comprising a lumen having a proximal end and a distal end, the transporter catheter extending within the lumen of the inner support catheter;

(ii) inflating at least one anchor balloon formed on the transporter catheter to anchor the transporter catheter to the inner support catheter;

(iii) inflating at least one orienting balloon formed proximate the distal end of the transporter catheter, the at least one orienting balloon upon inflation protruding at least partially outside the distal end of the inner support catheter and engaging a wall of a lumen in the patient's vasculature while advancing the inner support catheter in the patient's vasculature beyond a stenosis in the patient's vasculature;

(iv) withdrawing the transporter catheter after deflating the at least one orienting balloon and the at least one anchor balloon;

(v) placing the stent or other hardware through the inner support catheter distal to the stenosis;

(vi) withdrawing the inner support catheter; and

(vii) positioning the stent or other hardware at the site of interest;

wherein the transporter catheter comprises at least one internal channel for a guidewire, the guidewire extending along the at least one internal channel of the transporter catheter with a proximal end of the guidewire extending beyond the proximal end of the of the transporter catheter and a distal end of the guidewire extending beyond the distal end of the transporter catheter, the method further comprising the step of advancing the distal end of the guidewire beyond the stenosis in the patient's vasculature; and

wherein at least one imaging marker is placed at a location selected from a group consisting of the at least one orienting balloon, the at least one anchor balloon, and a distal portion of the shaft.

20 . A method for advancing a stent or other hardware to a site of interest inside a patient's vasculature, the method comprising:

(i) assembling a system comprising a mother catheter, an inner support catheter, and a transporter catheter, the transporter catheter comprising a shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the inner support catheter comprising a lumen having a proximal end and a distal end, the transporter catheter extending within the lumen of the inner support catheter;
