Abstract

An imaging system for a patient is provided. The system includes an imaging probe having an elongate shaft with a proximal end, a distal portion, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal portion. A rotatable optical core is positioned within the lumen of the elongate shaft. An optical assembly is positioned proximate the distal end of the rotatable optical core and is configured to direct light to tissue and collect reflected light from the tissue. An imaging assembly is constructed and arranged to optically couple to the imaging probe and the imaging assembly is configured to emit light into the imaging probe and receive the reflected light collected by the optical assembly.

Claims (35)

1 . A method of monitoring integrity of an imaging probe, the method comprising:

(a) inserting an imaging probe into a blood vessel of a patient, the imaging probe comprising:

an elongate shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal portion, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal portion;

a rotatable optical core comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least a portion of the rotatable optical core is positioned within the lumen of the elongate shaft; and

an optical assembly comprising a lens attached to the rotatable optical core, the lens positioned proximate the distal end of the rotatable optical core,

(b) directing light through the rotatable optical core to the optical assembly;

(c) receiving an identifiable back-reflection generated at an interface between the rotatable optical core and the optical assembly, wherein the identifiable back-reflection is receivable without rotating the rotatable optical core;

(d) detecting a change in the identifiable back-reflection compared to a previously detected identifiable back-reflection, wherein the change correlates to an undesired state of the rotatable optical core; and

(e) notifying a user if a change is detected by entering an alert mode, wherein the alert mode provides a visual or audible alert to the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the identifiable back-reflection comprises a loss of the identifiable back-reflection.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the change in the identifiable back-reflection comprises a change beyond an expected threshold.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the identifiable back-reflection while the imaging probe is being advanced within the patient.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving of the identifiable back-reflection and the detecting of the change are continuously repeated during an imaging procedure.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lens comprises a unitary lens.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the unitary lens is a gradient index (GRIN) lens.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the GRIN lens comprises a center portion having a first refractive index and the rotatable optical core comprises a center portion with a second refractive index, wherein the first refractive index is greater than the second refractive index.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first refractive index is approximately 0.01 to 0.05 greater than that of the second refractive index.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable optical core comprises a non-tapered fiber.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotatable optical core has a diameter of less than 130 micrometer (μm).

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the previously detected identifiable back-reflection is detected prior to inserting the imaging probe into the patient.

13 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising advancing the imaging probe through a delivery catheter.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging probe is slidingly received within a second shaft.

15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising introducing a flushing fluid via a port on a delivery catheter to remove non-transparent material proximate the optical assembly.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging probe has an outer diameter of no more than 0.025 inches.

17 . An imaging system for a patient, the system comprising:

an imaging probe, comprising:

an elongate shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal portion, and a lumen extending between the proximal end and the distal portion;

a rotatable optical core comprising a proximal end and a distal end, wherein at least a portion of the rotatable optical core is positioned within the lumen of the elongate shaft; and

an optical assembly comprising a lens attached to the rotatable optical core, the lens positioned proximate the distal end of the rotatable optical core,

wherein the lens has a center portion with a first refractive index, and the rotatable optical core has a center portion with a second refractive index, wherein the first refractive index is greater than the second refractive index;

the imaging system further comprising a console in communication with the imaging probe, wherein the console further comprises a processor and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the console to perform:

receiving an identifiable back-reflection generated at an interface between the rotatable optical core and the optical assembly, wherein the identifiable back-reflection is receivable without rotating the rotatable core; and

detecting a change in the identifiable back-reflection compared to a previously detected identifiable back-reflection, wherein the change correlates to an undesired state of the rotatable optical core.

18 . The imaging system of claim 17 , wherein the memory further comprises instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the console to notify a user if a change is detected by entering an alert mode, wherein the alert mode provides a visual or audible alert to the user.

19 . The imaging system of claim 17 , wherein the undesired state of the rotatable optical core comprises a break in the rotatable optical core.
