Abstract

A simulator piston is slidably fitted in a control piston to form a stroke liquid chamber between itself and an end wall of a control piston. A port which is closed at a forward limit of the control piston with respect to a backup piston is provided in the end wall of the control piston. A first reaction piston which constantly abuts against the end wall of the control piston and a second reaction piston which abuts against the end wall of the control piston when the control piston advances toward the backup piston through a predetermined travel distance or more, are relatively slidably mounted on the backup piston so that hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber acts on their front ends. Thus, it is possible to curb increase in a stroke and reaction of a brake operating member which would be invalidated by a brake stroke simulator when a hydraulic power source fails, and avoid insufficient strokes of the brake operating member even if spikes are inputted.

Claims (10)

1. A vehicle braking system comprising:

a master cylinder in which a master piston with its back turned to a boosted hydraulic pressure chamber is slidably housed in a casing;

a backup piston which is slidably housed in the casing with its front face turned to the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber and with its backward limit fixed, to push the master piston directly from behind in response to operation of a brake operating member when the hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber decreases;

a hydraulic booster equipped with a control piston for achieving a balance between reaction force generated by hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber and brake operating input from the brake operating member as well as with pressure control means contained in the backup piston to apply output hydraulic pressure of a hydraulic power source to the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber after regulating the output hydraulic pressure as the control piston moves axially; and

a brake stroke simulator installed between the brake operating member and the control piston in order for a driver to feel operating strokes of the brake operating member;

the master cylinder being connected to wheel brakes,

wherein the control piston is formed into a bottomed cylindrical shape with an end wall at an front end,

wherein the brake stroke simulator comprises an input member linked to the brake operating member, a simulator piston which is slidably fitted in the control piston by forming a stroke liquid chamber between itself and the end wall of the control piston and which is coupled to the input member, and elastic members installed between the input member and the control piston,

wherein a port which is closed at a forward limit of the control piston with respect to the backup piston is provided in the end wall of the control piston so as to communicate the stroke liquid chamber with a reservoir when the port is open, and

wherein a first reaction piston whose rear end constantly abuts against the end wall of the control piston and a second reaction piston whose rear end abuts against the end wall of the control piston when the control piston advances toward the backup piston through a predetermined travel distance or more are relatively slidably mounted on the backup piston, forming part of the hydraulic booster, so that hydraulic pressure of the boosted hydraulic pressure chamber acts on the front ends of the first and second reaction pistons.
