Abstract

An inkjet printhead having a plurality of ink ejection nozzles arranged on a substrate is provided. Each ink ejection nozzle comprises an ink chamber, an ink ejection port arranged on the ink chamber and a multiple-sectioned actuator arranged to be displaced relative to the ink chamber so as to cause ejection of ink from the ink ejection port. The actuator is displaced through actuation of at least one section. A first section of the actuator is pivotably mounted to the substrate and is arranged to contact the ink in the ink chamber. A second section of the actuator is coupled between the pivot point of the first section and an anchor arranged on the substrate. The anchor receives an actuation signal for actuating the second section which causes pivoting of the first section.

Claims (12)

1. An inkjet printhead having a plurality of ink ejection nozzles arranged on a substrate, each ink ejection nozzle comprising:

an ink chamber;

an ink ejection port arranged on the ink chamber; and

a multiple-sectioned thermal actuator arranged to be displaced relative to the ink chamber so as to cause ejection of ink from the ink ejection port, the thermal actuator being displaced through actuation of at least one section, wherein:

a first section of the thermal actuator is pivotably mounted to the substrate and is arranged to contact the ink in the ink chamber; and

a second section of the thermal actuator is coupled between the pivot point of the first section and an anchor arranged on the substrate, the anchor receiving an actuation signal for actuating the second section which causes pivoting of the first section.

2. A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein the actuation signal is an electrical current, and the second section is configured to expand due to self-heating when the electrical current is passed therethrough.

A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein the ink ejection port is defined in a roof of the ink chamber from which the first section of the actuator is spaced prior to actuation, the first section being displaced relative to the roof upon actuation to cause ejection of ink through the ink ejection port.

4. A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein the ink ejection port is defined in the first section of the actuator.

5. A printhead according to claim 4 , wherein the first section, and thereby the ink ejection port, is configured to move relative to the ink chamber upon actuation of the second section so as to cause the ink to be ejected from the ink ejection port.

A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein each ink ejection nozzle further comprises an ink inlet to the ink chamber, the ink inlet being configured so that the ink chamber is refilled with ink upon return of the actuator to a quiescent position after actuation and ejection of the ink through the ink ejection port.

7. A printhead according to claim 1 , wherein the first section of the actuator is pivotably mounted to the substrate via a second anchor.
