Abstract

An embedded antenna for facilitating wireless transmission of utility meter data is disclosed, where in one embodiment an RF antenna is a part of the faceplate of the utility meter. In another embodiment the utility meter faceplate is a single-layer or a multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) with the RF antenna printed on any desired layer. Such faceplates may be labeled to be viewable from outside of the meter housing and/or have openings to accommodate visual access to an output display of the meter consumption information.

Claims (40)

1. An antenna apparatus for embedded positioning relative to an external surface of a utility meter having a communications module, the antenna apparatus comprising:

single- or a multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) providing an integral structural portion of the utility meter, the PCB characterized by respective inner and outer surfaces relative to the utility meter, wherein the outer surface of the PCB is placed substantially adjacent to a front portion of the meter housing;

a patterned radio frequency (RF) antenna formed on a layer surface of the PCB, the patterned RF antenna configured to transmit and receive RF signals associated with a communications module of the utility meter; and

an electrical connection formed with the patterned RF antenna for association with the communications module of the utility meter.

2. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , wherein the patterned RF antenna comprises first and second conductive portions configured to collectively function as a dipole antenna.

3. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 2 , wherein the first and second conductive portions respectively extend across the PCB in a tapered fashion with wider end portions tapering inward towards a base junction for the electrical connection.

4. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , wherein the RF signals are at selected frequencies in a range from about 900 MHz to about 3 GHz.

5. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , wherein the PCB is formed to define at least one opening therethrough.

6. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 5 , wherein the at least one opening defined by the PCB accommodates visual access to an output display for relaying meter consumption information.

7. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , further comprising labeled information on the outer surface of the PCB, wherein selected of the labeled information is visible from the exterior of the utility meter.

The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 7 , wherein the labeled information corresponds to information selected from the group consisting of the utility name, bar code, customer number, meter serial number, meter class, service type, operating voltage range, socket type, meter form, recorder type, and hazard information.

The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , wherein the patterned RF antenna is positioned such that its primary plane of polarization is in a substantially vertical direction whenever the utility meter is mounted to a surface that is substantially perpendicular with respect to a ground surface.

The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , further comprising an encasing portion of dielectric material applied adjacent to the patterned RF antenna and the PCB such that the PCB and the encasing portion of dielectric material encapsulate and protect the patterned RF antenna within a dielectric body.

11. The embedded antenna apparatus as in claim 1 , wherein the PCB comprises a meter faceplate for the utility meter.

12. An electronic device with radio frequency (RF) communication components integrated therein for achieving improved RF communication capabilities to transmit utility meter data, the electronic device comprising:

an RF communications module configured to process and relay data signals transmitted and received by the electronic device;

a single- or multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB) forming a base structure for the electronic device;

at least one predefined portion of metallization layered on a layer surface of the PCB, the at least one predefined portion of metallization forming a functional antenna element for the RF communications module; and

a connective element connected to the at least one predefined portion of metallization for providing an electrical connection between the functional antenna element and the RF communications module, wherein an outer surface of the PCB is positioned substantially close to an external surface of the electronic devise housing to form a faceplate, and wherein the formed faceplate includes labeled information.

13. The electronic device as in claim 12 , wherein the data signals transmitted and received by the electronic device comprise utility metering information for a customer utility product selected from the group consisting of water, gas, electricity, cable, and telecommunications.

14. The electronic device as in claim 12 , further comprising another predefined portion of metallization layered on the PCB such that first and second portions of metallization collectively form a dipole antenna for radiating and receiving signals associated with the RF communications module.

15. The electronic device as in claim 14 , wherein the first and second portions of metallization forming the dipole antenna respectively extend across the PCB in a tapered fashion with wider end portions tapering inwards toward the connective element.

16. The electronic device as in claim 12 , wherein the functional antenna element transmits and receives signals at selected frequencies in a range from about 900 MHZ to about 3 GHz.

17. The electronic device as in claim 12 , wherein the functional antenna element is configured for positioning such that its primary plane of polarization is in a substantially vertical direction.

The electronic device as in claim 12 , further comprising an encasing portion of dielectric material applied adjacent to the at least one predefined portion of metallization and the PCB such that the PCB and the encasing portion of dielectric material encapsulate and protect the at least one predefined portion of metallization within a dielectric body.

19. A utility meter for monitoring or controlling the distribution of a utility product or service to a customer, the utility meter comprising:

at least one housing component for protecting selected electronics and other internal components of the utility meter;

an outer cover for encasing the at least one housing component;

a single- or multi-layer dielectric faceplate attached to the front of the at least one internal housing component and within a distance from other electronic or electric parts attached to the housing and substantially close to a front of the utility meter; and

a patterned radio frequency (RF) antenna formed on a selected layer surface of the faceplate, the patterned RF antenna configured to transmit and receive RF signals from a communications module associated with the utility meter.

20. The utility meter as in claim 19 , wherein the patterned RF antenna comprises a dipole antenna.

21. The utility meter as in claim 19 , wherein the patterned RF antenna transmits and receives RF signals at selected frequencies in a range from about 900 MHz to about 3 GHz.

22. The utility meter as in claim 19 , wherein the faceplate is formed to define at least one opening therethrough.

23. The utility meter as in claim 22 , wherein the at least one opening defined by the faceplate accommodates visual access to an output display for relaying meter consumption information.

24. The utility meter as in claim 22 , wherein the at least one opening defined by the faceplate is configured for interconnecting with mating features on the front of the at least one housing component.

25. The utility meter as in claim 19 , further comprising labeled information on the outer surface of the faceplate, wherein selected of the labeled information is visible from the exterior of the utility meter.

The utility meter as in claim 25 , wherein the labeled information corresponds to information selected from the group consisting of the utility name, bar code, customer number, meter serial number, meter class, service type, operating voltage range, socket type, meter form, recorder type, and hazard information.

27. The utility meter as in claim 19 , wherein the outer cover for encasing the at least one housing component, the faceplate and the patterned RF antenna is made of a transparent dielectric material.

28. The utility meter as in claim 27 , further comprising labeled information on the outer surface of the faceplate, wherein selected of the labeled information is visible through the outer cover from the exterior of the utility meter.

The utility meter as in claim 28 , wherein the labeled information corresponds to information selected from the group consisting of the utility name, bar code, customer number, meter serial number, meter class, service type, operating voltage range, socket type, meter form, recorder type, and hazard information.
