Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions and methods for cancer diagnostics, including but not limited to, cancer markers. In particular, the present invention provides gene expression profiles associated with prostate cancers. Genes identified as cancer markers using the methods of the present invention find use in the diagnosis and characterization of prostate cancer. In addition, the genes provide targets for cancer drug screens and therapeutic applications.

Claims (12)

1. A method for characterizing prostate tumor tissue in a subject, comprising:

a) providing a prostate tumor tissue sample from a subject; and

b) detecting the presence or absence of an increased level of expression of enhancer of zeste homolog 2 in said sample relative to the level of expression in a normal prostate tissue sample, thereby characterizing said prostate tissue sample.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said detecting the presence of expression of enhancer of zeste homolog 2 comprises detecting the presence of a enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said detecting the presence of a enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide comprises exposing said enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide to an antibody specific to said enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide and detecting the binding of said antibody to said enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said subject comprises a human subject.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said characterizing said prostate tumor tissue comprises identifying a stage of prostate cancer in said prostate tissue.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said stage is selected from the group consisting of high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate carcinoma, and metastatic prostate carcinoma.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of c) providing a prognosis to said subject.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said prognosis comprises a risk of developing metastatic prostate cancer.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein said prognosis comprises the risk of prostate cancer recurrence after prostatectomy.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of measuring the level of expression of said enhancer of zeste homolog 2 polypeptide.
