Abstract

A data card reader for optically reading data from a card includes a reader unit and a card transport assembly. The reader unit includes an elongated piece of transparent material formed with a longitudinal emit lens that is disposed to focus light from internal LEDs onto the data card. A series of light sensors are disposed along the transparent material beneath an array of corresponding reflected light lenses that serve to focus light reflected from a card onto the light sensors in use. In one embodiment the light sensors comprise a CCD array.

Claims (12)

1. A data card reader arranged to read a data card bearing optically readable data, said reader including;

a reader unit comprising:

a light source;

an elongate and arcuate emit lens disposed to focus light from the light source upon the data card; and

a series of reflected light lenses located to focus light reflected by the data card from the light source onto an array of light sensors, the emit lens and the series of reflected light lenses are formed into a single elongated piece of transparent material, the transparent material defining recesses in which the light source and array of light sensors are located;

a planar substrate onto which the light sensors and light sources are mounted, said substrate abutting the piece of transparent material; and

a card transport assembly arranged to transport the data card across the reader unit, and comprising a pair of pinch rollers for pinching the data card during transport.

2. A data card reader according to claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a series of light emitting diodes disposed along the piece of transparent material.

3. A data card reader according to claim 1 , wherein the array of light sensors comprises a CCD array.

4. A data card reader according to claim 1 , wherein the array of light sensors comprises a staggered array of light sensors.

5. A data card reader according to claim 4 , wherein the reflected light lenses are staggered to correspond to the staggered array of light sensors.

6. A data card reader according to claim 1 wherein the card transport assembly includes a data card detection sensor and is arranged to transport the data card across the reader unit in response to a signal from the data card detection sensor.
