Abstract

A portable wound treatment apparatus, for stimulating the healing of superficial wounds, comprises a housing containing a suction pump and a canister for containing fluids drawn from the wound. The housing is supported on a harness or belt worn by the patient. The canister is connected to a porous wound dressing at the wound site via a plurality of tubes, a multi-lumen tube or a combination thereof. A rechargeable battery pack may be incorporated within the housing or externally thereto. The external battery pack may be shaped to balance the housing on the harness or belt. Pressure transducers are provided to monitor and report pressures at the wound site or internal to the canister. Monitored pressures may also be utilized to determine the filled state of the canister and, thereafter, either report this state to the operator or automatically discontinue suction from the wound, or both.

Claims (14)

1. An apparatus for applying negative pressure to a superficial wound in a mammal, said apparatus comprising:

a flexible porous pad, said porous pad comprising an open, intercommunicating cellular foam;

a connector for introduction of the negative pressure to said porous pad, said connector comprising a disc-like member having a lower face in contact with said porous pad and a spout opposite said lower face for connection to an end of a suction tube;

a surgical drape for forming a substantially air-tight seal over said porous pad, said connector and the wound site; and

a multi-lumen suction tube, having a center lumen and a plurality of outer lumens, for connecting said porous pad through said connector, to a negative pressure source;

wherein said multi-lumen tube is adapted to allow fluid to be drawn from the wound via the center lumen while simultaneously allowing pressure at the wound site to be monitored via at least one of the plurality of outer lumens.

2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein said porous pad comprises a polyvinyl alcohol foam.

3. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein said surgical drape comprises an aperture for the projection therethrough of said spout.

4. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 wherein said surgical drape comprises a plastics film.

5. The apparatus as recited in claim 4 wherein said plastics film is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive for securing said porous pad and said connector to the wound site.

6. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein said negative pressure source comprises a pump.

7. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the center lumen of the multi-lumen tube comprises a central bore adapted to remove fluids from the wound site and the plurality of outer lumens are defined by annular spaces of the multi-lumen tube adapted to allow air to flow therethrough.

8. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the center lumen of the multi-lumen tube comprises a central bore adapted to remove fluids from the wound site, and the plurality of outer lumens comprise conduits located within the walls of the multi-lumen tube adapted to allow air to flow therethrough.

9. The apparatus as recited in claim 8 , wherein the conduits are spaced at 90 degree intervals around the central bore.
