Abstract

A method of processing carbon dioxide adsorbent for use in a CO2 removal system. The method includes combining a polymer, lithium hydroxide (LiOH), and lubricant that dissolves the polymer to form a first LiOH adsorbent. A structure may be formed using the first LiOH adsorbent. The lubricant may be extracted from the structured LiOH adsorbent using a solvent to form a second LiOH adsorbent. The solvent may be removed from the second LiOH adsorbent to form a third LiOH adsorbent. The third LiOH adsorbent may be hydrated to form a fourth LiOH adsorbent having a water content above an anhydrous level.

Claims (38)

1. A method of processing carbon dioxide adsorbent for use in a C02 removal system, said method comprising:

combining a polymer, lithium hydioxide (LiOH), and lubricant that dissolves the polymer to form a first LiOH adsorbent;

extracting the lubricant from the structured LiOH adsorbent using a solvent to form a second LiOH adsorbent;

removing the solvent from the second LiOH adsorbent to form a third LiOH adsorbent; and

hydrating the third LiOH adsorbent to form a fourth LiOH adsorbent having a water content above an anhydrous level.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said combining includes combining amounts of polymer, LiOH, and lubricant so that density of the third LiOH adsorbent is below approximately 1.0 g/cm 3 .

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating includes adding water to the third LiOH adsorbent so that the fourth LiOH adsorbent has a water content between an anhydrous level and approximately 10 percent by weight.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating includes adding water to the third LiOH adsorbent so that the fourth LiOH adsorbent has a water content between an approximately 10 percent and approxiniately 20 percent by weight.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating includes adding water to the third LiOH adsorbent so that the fourth LiOH adsorbent has a water content between an approximately 20 percent and approximately 43 percent by weight.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating includes adding water to the third LiOH adsorbent so that the fourth LiOH adsorbent has a water content between an approxiniately 36 percent and approximately 43 percent byweight.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating includes adding water to the third LiOH adsorbent to form a fourth LiOH adsorbent having a water content below approximately 43 percent by weight.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said forming further includes forming the structure having a first side and a second side, at least one of the sides including at least one protrusion.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein said hydrating is performed on the side of the structure with the at least one protrusion.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating is performed utilizing an ultrasonic spray mister.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said hydrating is performed utilizing water vapor.

12. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the amount of lubricant combined with the polymer and LiOH based on an application in which the fourth LiOH adsorbent is to be used.

13. A method for removing carbon dioxide, said method comprising:

forming an anhydrous lithium hydroxide (LiOH) adsorbent;

adding water to the anhydrous LiOH adsorbent to form a pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent;

including the pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent, having water content above an anhydrous level, in a location having airflow with carbon dioxide; and

removing carbon dioxide with the pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including the pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent in the form of granules.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent having a density below approximately 1.0 g/cm 3 .

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH with a water content between an anhydrous level and approximately 10 percent by weight.

17. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH with a water content between approximately 10 percent and approximately 20 percent by weight.

18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH with a water content between approximately 20 percent and approximately 43 percent by weight.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH with a water content between approximately 36 percent and approximately 43 percent by weight.

20. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including pre-hydrated LiOH with a water content below approximately 43 percent by weight.

21. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising enclosing the LiOH adsorbent in a canister having a first opening and a second opening.

22. The method according to claim 13 , wherein said including pre-hydrated LiOH adsorbent includes including at least one sheet having the LiOH adsorbent.

23. The method according to claim 22 , further comprising incorporating the at least one sheet of LiOH adsorbent in a canister configured to be incorporated in the system.
