Abstract

Some embodiments of the present invention provide stimulation systems, components and methods for stimulation of the spinal cord and the nervous system. Additional embodiments provide for selective stimulation and/or neuromodulation of one or more dorsal root ganglia through implantation of an electrode on, in or around a dorsal root ganglia. Some other embodiments of the present invention provide methods for selective neurostimulation of one or more dorsal root ganglia as well as techniques for applying neurostimulation to the spinal cord and nervous system. Still other embodiments of the present invention provide stimulation systems and components for selective stimulation and/or neuromodulation of one or more dorsal root ganglia through implantation of an electrode on, in or around a dorsal root ganglia in combination with a pharmacological agent.

Claims (29)

1. A method of stimulating the nervous system, comprising:

implanting an electrode in proximity to a dorsal root ganglion without said electrode penetrating a vertebral body, wherein the electrode is capable of selectively stimulating the dorsal root ganglion and excluding other nervous tissue due to its size or shape; and

activating the electrode to selectively stimulate the dorsal root ganglion.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein implanting an electrode comprises implanting a plurality of electrodes; and activating each of the plurality of electrodes to stimulate only a nerve root ganglion.

3. A method according to claim 2 wherein at least one of the plurality of electrodes stimulates only a dorsal root ganglion.

4. A method according to claim 2 further comprising: another electrode positioned to stimulate only a nerve root ganglion within the sympathetic nervous system.

5. The method according to claim 2 wherein at least one electrode unilaterally stimulates a spinal level.

6. A method according to claim 2 wherein the plurality of electrodes are positioned to bilaterally stimulate a spinal level.

7. A method according to claim 2 wherein the plurality of electrodes are arranged to stimulate more than one spinal level.

8. A method according to claim 2 wherein the plurality of electrodes are arranged to bilaterally stimulate more than one spinal level.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein implanting an electrode in proximity to a dorsal root ganglion comprises implanting an electrode within a dorsal root ganglion.

10. The method according to claim 1 wherein implanting an electrode in proximity to a dorsal root ganglion comprises implanting an electrode on a dorsal root ganglion.

11. A method of stimulating the nervous system, comprising:

implanting an electrode; and

activating the electrode to stimulate only a nerve root ganglion, wherein implanting the electrode comprises passing a portion of a lead completely through the nerve root ganglion.

12. The method according to claim 1 the implanting step further comprising:

forming an opening in the dorsal root ganglion epinurium;

passing the electrode through the opening.

13. The method according to claim 1 the implanting step further comprising:

approaching the dorsal root ganglion from within the nerve sheath.

14. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

approaching a dorsal root ganglion using a lateral approach prior to performing the implanting step.

15. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

approaching a dorsal root ganglion using an implantation approach that crosses the medial line inferior to the dorsal root ganglion prior to performing the implanting step.

16. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

advancing the electrode along a superior directed pathway prior to performing the implanting step.

17. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

providing a therapeutic agent to the dorsal root ganglion after or during the activating step.

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein the therapeutic agent is provided from a coating on the electrode.
