Abstract

A method of operating a navigation system includes obtaining a destination location and identifying a parking facility proximate said destination location. The method further includes providing historic parking availability information for the identified parking facility. The historic parking availability information is based on past parking availability at the identified parking facility. The method may also calculate a route from an origin to the parking facility and provide guidance for following the route. Additionally, the method obtains a reservation for parking at the parking facility.

Claims (39)

1. A method of operating a navigation system comprising:

obtaining a destination location;

identifying a parking facility proximate said destination location; and

transmitting a parking message, said parking message comprising an identification code of said identified parking facility and historic parking availability information for said identified parking facility, said historic parking availability information based on past parking availability at said identified parking facility.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

calculating a route from an origin to said parking facility; and

providing said route.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

providing guidance for following said route.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

obtaining a reservation for parking at said parking facility.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving said parking message.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said navigation system includes a local system in communication with a remote system, wherein said remote system transmits said parking message to said local system.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said historic parking availability information corresponds to a predetermined time of day.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing real time parking availability information for said parking facility.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein if a real time parking availability is available for said parking facility, said parking message comprising said identification code and said real time parking availability replaces said historic parking availability information.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein if a real time parking availability differs from said historic parking availability information for said parking facility, said parking message comprising said identification code and said real time parking availability replaces said historic parking availability information.

11. A method of operating a computing platform comprising:

obtaining a request for parking information, said request including a destination;

determining a parking availability corresponding to a specified time for at least one parking facility proximate said destination, if real time parking availability data is available for said parking facility, said parking availability comprises said real time parking availability data, if said real time parking availability data is not available, said parking availability comprises historic parking availability information; and

transmitting a parking message including said determined parking availability.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein said specified time corresponds to an estimated time of arrival at said destination.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein said step of determining said parking availability considers a day of week factor.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein said step of determining said parking availability considers an event factor.

15. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

providing a route to said parking facility.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the parking message further includes an identification code of said parking facility.

17. A method of providing parking information comprising:

providing a database containing data representing historic parking availability for a parking facility at a plurality of times; and

providing parking information for said parking facility for a specified time, said parking information comprising a historic parking availability at said specified time,

wherein said step of providing said parking information comprises transmitting a parking message, said parking message comprising an identification code of said parking facility and said historic parking availability.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein if a real time parking availability is available for said parking facility, said parking message comprising said identification code and said real time parking availability replaces said historic parking availability.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein if a real time parking availability differs from said historic parking availability for said parking facility, said parking message comprising said identification code and said real time parking availability replaces said historic parking availability.

20. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

providing a route to said parking facility.

21. The method of claim 17 further comprising:

obtaining a reservation for parking at said parking facility.
